Since the start of the Boruto manga, all fans could think about was how the plot would see the manga reach the opening scene of the series. Hence, fans were left relieved when the manga finally switched from the Naruto Next Generations manga to the Two Blue Vortex manga storyline.
Since the switch, fans have been left elated by the number of developments showcased in every new chapter. However, the one development that has left the fans scratching their heads is the protagonist asking Kawaki to kill him if he goes berserk in the future. Does this mean that the protagonist was prepared to die in the flash-forward?
Just as fans put out their theories on the same, one manga fan theorized that Boruto would not die in the series. As per them, unbeknownst to fans, a third character was present during the flash-forward scene, and it was none other than Mitsuki.

Boruto fan theorizes Mitsuki being present in the opening scene
According to a theory by a manga fan on Reddit u/MitsukiOtsutsuki, Boruto and Kawaki were not alone in the opening scene. As per them, the sword that the protagonist had equipped was not the one that Sasuke Uchiha used; it was Mitsuki who had transformed it into a sword. This is because Kawaki's eye cannot shrink a transformed item.
As per them, Mitsuki is "present" in the scene to safeguard his "Sun." The protagonist cannot be killed as his eye, Jougan, was dubbed the "star of hope" by Toneri Otsutsuki. In addition, Otsutsuki is once seen speaking to the protagonist in his dream. Through the dream, Toneri conveyed, "I hope your eye will guide you to the light which will dispel darkness."
Something similar happened with Mitsuki; just as he awakened his Sage Mode, Log said that Mitsuki would become the light and illuminate the dark. Considering that "dispel darkness" and "illuminate the dark" essentially meant the same thing, the fan theorized that Toneri might be referring to Mitsuki when he mentioned "light" in the protagonist's dream.
In addition, most people call Mitsuki "Boruto's shadow." However, there have been hints about them being equals. As evident from the titles of episodes in which Boruto attained Jougan's "The Path That I Can See" and Mitsuki awakened Sage Mode "The Path Lit by Full Moon," the series might have been implying that the two powers are connected and could be equals.
Moreover, one must remember that both characters awakened their respective abilities at age 8, have similar aura, and could be connected to Toneri. Despite being an anime-original character, even Urashiki Otsutsuki depicted some connection between the two abilities. He called Mitsuki's Sage Mode "dangerous" and the protagonist's Jougan "troublesome." Therefore, there is a good chance that the Sage Mode and Jougan are to be categorized as "equals."
Lastly, as seen in the series, Boruto is Mitsuki's "Sun." As for Mitsuki, his name partly means "Moon." Therefore, there is a possibility that the two characters could form the Sun and Moon seals like Naruto and Sasuke at the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War and seal destruction that Toneri talked about, which in this case might be Kawaki.
