Übel Blatt Episode 1: Köinzell sets out to find the Seven Heroes
Übel Blatt Episode 1 begins with a gritty and dark scene set in 3972 at the Forest of Death, where the Empire's strongest warrior is mercilessly cut to death by his "comrades." The opening scene reveals that the empire sent the 14 strongest young warriors with the Holy Lances to stop the invasion of Wischtech from crossing over the border.
Three of them died while the other four betrayed their kin. However, it was only a false narrative fabricated by the seven actual traitors, who were worshipped as "heroes." In reality, the four heroes, who were labeled as "traitors" were the ones to accomplish the mission.
However, the "Seven Heroes" enjoyed the fruits of their labors and mercilessly slaughtered them. With his dying breath, the empire's strongest warrior vowed to never forgive the seven traitors. His death cry reverberated throughout the forest, and the era of prosperity under the seven "Heroes" began.
However, the peaceful era only lasted 20 years as an ominous shadow loomed large. After that, the narrative for Übel Blatt Episode 1 switched to the border town of Rielde-Velem, showing the events of the present. A young girl is seen hiding in the merchant's goods, hoping to go to the other side of the border.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Monk Warriors, Lacheb, publicly executes a few stowaways for their grave sins. They beg for mercy but only get brutal death in return. The Monk's leader warns the onlookers to think twice before committing such foolish acts.
According to Übel Blatt Episode 1, the Monastery under the reign of the Seven Heroes has a substantial authority over the town. They will only hand over a "Pass" to go to the other side if they determine the subject as a "just person." In reality, they only offer their judgment based on the bribes.
Just then, one of the Monks catches the young girl, who was hiding in the merchant's goods. She begs for mercy, saying it was a mistake on her part. However, Lacheb doesn't listen. He orders his men to publicly execute her. Just then, a young man with a scar on his face arrives at the scene.
He addresses the young girl as Peepi and calls her his sister. However, the Monk's leader doesn't buy the young man's words and orders his execution as well. Just then in Übel Blatt Episode 1, a middle-aged man with an eye patch appears.
He offers the Monk's leader a hefty sum of money as a bribe to free the duo. The Monk changes his tone and lets them go, mentioning how he can see "Good Karma" in them. Peepi expresses her deep gratitude to the young man and the other person.
Later, the young man with the scar admonishes Peepi for jeopardizing his plan to go to the other side. At the same time, he asks the man with the eye patch why he spent such a hefty amount to save them. According to Übel Blatt Episode 1, the man with the eyepatch has been preparing a large-scale stowaway for days.
There's a large ship that will sail for the other side of the border. However, if the monks get suspicious, they will cancel the trip. The man with the eye patch says he has already given a lot of money to the pro-stowaways for the mission. That's why, he doesn't want the plan to be jeopardized.
He asks the duo to return to the village when the young man wants to know about the pro-stowaways. He says he has to go to the other side at any cost. The feeling is mutual with Peepi. Just then in Übel Blatt Episode 1, around 10-12 armored monks arrive at the scene to loot and kill them.
The man with the eye patch senses danger, but the young man effortlessly eliminates his enemies in the blink of an eye. He wonders who he truly is. The young man says his name is Koinzell. The man with the eye patch then introduces himself as Wied.
Übel Blatt Episode 1: Köinzell and his party face a grave danger
After the introduction, Wied takes the duo to the pro-stowaways through an underground passage. According to Übel Blatt Episode 1, there's a bar in the underground fortress of the city, owned by Altea. She handles illegal smuggling or stowaways. In fact, Wied has planned the large-scale stowaway mission with her for days.
Wied tells her about Köinzell and Peepi and requests a discount. Although Altea doesn't want to accept it at first, she observes the young boy and settles on a deal. It is implied in Übel Blatt Episode 1 that Altea has asked Köinzell for a bold favor. However, Köinzell says he can go to the other side on his own.
Just then, Altea reminds him that it's not that easy, and if he misses the next day's ship, he won't be able to meet the Seven Heroes. According to Übel Blatt Episode 1, the Seven Heroes will camp by the border at the Thousand Stonespears for two days to suppress the civil war's chaos.
Elsewhere in Übel Blatt Episode 1, the Monastery's leader wants to weed out the underground settlement. He goes to the bar with his men to finish them off. However, Köinzell's blade extinguishes their lives. Lacheb, who barely survives, calls for a Martial Law.
As the siren reverberates throughout the town, Altea, Peepi, Wied, and Köinzell run to a safe point. Seeing Köinzell under the brightly lit moon, Altea remembers the gaze of a man she used to admire. She vows to help Köinzell to get to the other side. However, she says they must hurry or else the ship will sail.
Altea then opts for a secret route the monastery doesn't know. According to Übel Blatt Episode 1, it's a sealed-off space separated from the other underground cities, which leads directly to the underground storage of the port. However, Köinzell doesn't like it that much since it's cramped. Additionally, the space is filled with underground monsters.
However, they confront a gigantic monster at the end of the passageway. The monster brings back nightmares for Altea, as she remembers how her loved one died at the hands of the same monster years ago. Köinzell tries to fight the creature, but its immense power corners him.
Altea is on the verge of losing hope, but Wied isn't. He demonstrates a strategy to wound the monster and break open the passage's ceiling. However, the creature counters with a decisive punch to gravely wound Wied. Meanwhile, the moonlight falls on Köinzell's limp body.
On the other hand, Wied and Peepi await their tragic death. Although they can see the ship outside, they feel they won't make it there. Just then in Übel Blatt Episode 1, Köinzell leaps into the air with renewed energy. He cuts down the creature with a single strike of his sword.
As the young man leads an injured Wied, Peepi, and Altea to the ship, he faces a new challenge in front of him. Übel Blatt Episode 1 ends with the Monastery's leader, Lacheb, arriving with the Rangzatz, who demonstrates the power of his Magic Sword to halt the party's progress.
Conclusion
Übel Blatt Episode 1 has perfectly set up the narrative, introducing the protagonist, Köinzell, Wied, and the stowaway girls, Altea and Peepi. Studio Satelite and Staple Entertainment have done a fine job of showcasing the iconic moments from Etorouji Shion's dark fantasy manga.
