Undead Unluck episode 2 was released on Friday, October 13, 2023. The episode revealed more about the world in which the plucky unlucky and undead co-protagonists reside. This included details about the enigmatic "Union" organization and exactly what "Negator" means.
Andy and Fuuko continue their journey seeking Andy's "perfect death", the two are having severe growing pains becoming comrades. This is owing to Andy's insistence on further "testing" Fuuko's Unluck ability. The Union coming after them hasn't helped matters one bit, and it'll take a lot for the two to survive the coming days.
This article will unfold and help flesh out more of the lore and the world of Undead Unluck episode 2.
Undead Unluck episode 2: The Union attacks, Andy and Fuuko under fire
Undead Unluck episode 1 introduced the titular duo and a brief explanation of both of their abilities. In short, Andy's Undead ability means can't die even when hit by something like a meteor. Fuuko's Unluck ability causes misfortune, much like RWBY's Qrow Branwen, when she's in physical contact with someone.
Undead Unluck episode 2, meanwhile, further explores and hypothesizes thanks to both Andy and Fuuko having a heated argument. Fuuko effectively hypothesizes that her Unluck works harder the closer she is to the subject of her physical affections, as her grandfather only broke his feet when walking away.
Since Andy wants to have her give him the "perfect death", he resolves to make her love him since making love is off the table. Basically, they need each other. Andy needs Fuuko to help him with the perfect death, Fuuko needs him to protect her since he's unkillable.
Who or what is the Union/are the "Negators"?
The terms "Negators" and "UMAs" appeared in the first episode. Undead Unluck episode 2 goes further into detail about this mysterious organization that was after the unlikely duo. The Union name is a shortened version, it stands for Anti-Unidentified Phenomena Control Organization. They hunt and capture or kill strange and unusual people that break reality.
The problem with them according to Andy and the two "negators" that Andy and Fuuko encounter, is how persistent and horrifying they are. Andy mentions when outfitting Fuuko at one of his safehouses armories, Union caught him about 50 years ago. He notes that the Union was not shy about dissecting him and all other manner of grisly experimentations and he doesn't want that for Fuuko.
"Negators" are people who somehow negate the rules of reality within a certain distance of themselves. An example would be the "Unavoidable" robot suit-wearing man who menaces Andy and Fuuko. His power is to negate the opponent's ability to avoid anything he does by negating their muscle movements when he enters an attack stance.
Undead and Unluck: New Union members?
Among the many reveals in this episode, from what Negators are, to the fact that Undead and Unluck aren't the only superpowers, a very significant one is how the Union works. First of all, they're mainly staffed by a total of 10 Negators and hunt down other UMAs for either capture or termination.
In this case, it was to terminate Unluck (Fuuko) and capture Undead (Andy). However, thanks to Fuuko and Andy negotiating and realizing a few things, they begin to understand that if they terminate two members of the organization they can join it.
At first, Andy just wants to have Fuuko join for her own safety. Fuuko, however, refuses this as she is starting to warm up to Andy as a friend and doesn't want him to be tortured.
Even as she's about to strip down when it looks like they're about to die, Andy dissuades the idea of it as even he wouldn't go that far out of desperation.
Their antics gained favor from the other person who tells them another member of the Union will be in Russia and bids them good luck. The antics included killing the Unavoidable guy and trying everything against his partner who seemed to be doing a Satoru Gojo impression.
Final Thoughts on Undead Unluck episode 2
Undead Unluck episode 2 is a solid continuation of the ongoing story. The OP and ED are both surprisingly catchy. The OP shows various characters and surreal imagery present later on in the series and the ED is a dream about a woman Andy seemingly knew. The animation by both David Production and TMS Entertainment continues to be jaw-droppingly wonderful.
While Undead Unluck episode 2 has a lot of lore that it throws at the audience, it never breaks the flow of the story. The humor of both Andy and Fuuko's antics continues to be funny, including Andy having no idea where to go after the safehouse and the various movement-related gags from the Negators.
Overall, Undead Unluck episode 2 continues to be an interesting story, with plenty more to come if the third episode preview is anything to go by. The story itself is starting out slowly but has already planted several seeds of interest to keep going for a long time, as manga readers can attest.
