Uzumaki Episode 1 recap
The previous episode began with Kirie making her way to the Kurouzu train station to meet her boyfriend, Shuichi, who was returning from high school. As they walked together, Shuichi suggested that they should run away because he could not bear the spirals that seemed to infest Kurouzu. He then recounted how his father, Toshio, had developed an obsession with spirals. Kirie found his story difficult to believe.
Toshio's obsession led him to custom-order a large round tub. In a shocking turn of events, he somehow managed to fit himself inside it, contorting his body into a spiral shape, which ultimately led to his demise. However, his family announced that Toshio's death was caused by a fall down the stairs.
When Toshio's body was cremated, black clouds rose in a spiral shape and formed his face in the sky before descending to Dragonfly Pond. This sight traumatized Shuichi's mother, who had to be hospitalized. Since she developed a phobia, anything resembling a spiral was hidden from her, yet she cut off her own fingertips with scissors because of the spiral shape of her fingerprints.
The episode also depicted how when Kirie introduced her friend Azami to Shuichi, the latter freaked out, grabbed Kirie's hand, and ran away because he sensed the spiral in Azami. Azami had a crescent-shaped scar on her forehead that seemed to attract everyone. Being rejected by Shuichi made her obsessed with him, and the scar kept growing into a spiral until it consumed her, but not before an admirer got sucked in as well.
Moreover, the episode followed Takayama, a student at Kirie's school, who was extraordinarily slow and would only attend school on rainy days, arriving soaking wet. He was often bullied by other students. One day, as the boys stripped him down, they discovered a spiral-shaped growth on his back.
What to expect from Uzumaki Episode 2 (speculative)?
Uzumaki Episode 2 is likely to continue with the storylines introduced in the previous episode. Fans of the manga might already have guessed that this means they will get to see Shuichi’s mother’s fate, the mystery behind the spiral shape on Takayama’s back, and the significance of Kirie’s father’s pottery.
The anime is juggling multiple plotlines simultaneously, and the upcoming episode may introduce even more. It is expected that the next episode will be longer, with a runtime of over forty minutes.
