Black Clover's Charlotte Roselei has been a recurring character, closely tied to Yami's story and the eventual conclusion of his character arc. While Charlotte has mostly appeared during major fights and several gag episodes, her powers are linked to a curse that has not been fully explained in the manga.

Charlotte Roselei is a Clover Kingdom noble from House Roselei, and her magic is Briar Magic, which allows her to manifest and manipulate briars. Currently, she is one of the squad captains fighting against Lucius Zogratis and one of the few captains who has undergone a proper training arc while experiencing significant character growth.

Charlotte was afflicted with a curse, an essential part of her character. However, due to the vague descriptions of the curse, many fans wonder, "What is Charlotte's curse?" While it has not received a full explanation, the curse essentially dampens Charlotte's Briar Magic to a considerable degree. The curse was said to manifest on her eighteenth birthday, aiming to trap her and her family in a time cage unless she fell in love with a man.

Charlotte Roselei's curse explained

Charlotte Roselei was a noble who was born into House Roselei. Her curse was placed on her early in her childhood, though the specific details of how she was cursed and who or what placed the curse on her have not been revealed. The curse dictated that she would lose control over her Briar Magic, and she and her entire family would be trapped in a time capsule unless Charlotte fell in love with a man.

Although Charlotte has mostly been shown using blue roses, her Briar Magic originally manifested as red roses, which turned blue under the curse's influence. The blue roses, affected by the curse, were much weaker than the original red roses, also dampening the full potential of her magic.

How Charlotte broke the curse in Black Clover

Charlotte Roselei was unable to break the curse before her eighteenth birthday, at which point the curse fully manifested. This caused her magic to overflow, encasing her in a shell made of briars. However, Yami managed to cut through the briar shell and reach Charlotte.

This event led to Charlotte falling for Yami, effectively stopping the curse. Although the curse was broken, it was not completely removed and continued to persist in the form of her blue roses. Eventually, Charlotte learned various methods to mold this so-called curse into anti-magic, infusing it with her briars.

Charlotte's relationship with Yami has been a long-running gag within the Black Clover narrative since their introduction. While their relationship has mostly been focused on during low-stakes situations, it became an integral part of their characters and has been mentioned throughout the final arc of the series.

Despite her efforts to keep her feelings for Yami a secret, the entire Blue Rose squad knows about her feelings and supports them, much to her own surprise. Charlotte Roselei's overwhelming love for Yami manifested in her actively avoiding him. Yami could sense Charlotte's turmoil around him, leading him to think that she hated him.

However, Yami still had deep-rooted respect for her as a very strong and capable mage and fellow captain. While Yami had no idea about Charlotte's love for him, she openly confessed her love to a dying Yami in Black Clover's Spade Kingdom arc. This was further followed by Charlotte avoiding a healed Yami, who later invited her to discuss their situation after learning about the confession from Finral.
