What is Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen?

The anime Jujutsu Kaisen has brought in various ways to determine a character's power level and superiority in terms of strength and technique. One such way of knowing this is by the character’s Domain Expansion. This is an advanced level of barrier technique which is considered to be one of the highest levels of sorcery in the Jujutsu world. Within this barrier the user's ability sky rockets to the Mac making him an unstoppable force for his opponent.

In this article we will be going through the description, types, drawbacks, counters and list of domains used in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Do note that the information taken also covers various factors in the recent manga chapters as well.

Description

As mentioned earlier, Domain expansion is one of the most supreme techniques of any jujutsu user. The way to achieve or to activate it is by increasing his or her innate domain with cursed energy while creating a barrier to form it inside a separate space. Within this barrier the caster then releases his cursed technique to complete the expansion which allows them to use their abilities throughout the domain. Throughout the series one thing has been common while enacting a domain, which is a hand sign. To activate a domain, the user casts a specific hand sign or signal unique to the user. By the looks of it from the outside, a doman expansion looks like a completely closed black sphere floating in the air.

Types

Now that we have understood what a Domain expansion is, here are a few types of the same.

1. Lethal Domain

In a Lethal Doman, the caster's abilities are amplified to a point where any cursed techniques released within the domain by the caster is a sure to hit technique. This sure to hit factor is what makes this domain a lethal one. While we have seen multiple complete domains throughout the series, only Sukuna and Kenjaku possess the ability to expand a lethal domain. Their barriers possess no outer shell but still have the sure hit factor which makes their domain a nightmare for other Jujutsu sorcerers in the world.

2. Non-Lethal Domains

These domains were very common during the golden era of Jujutsu sorcerers. Unlike the Letal domains, these Domain expansions were constructed to obey the rules of the embedded cursed technique. Over time the number of fashion of Non-Lethal Domains decreased as sorcerers tried to master the lethal techniques to have a one hit finish maneuver. An excellent example of a non-lethal domain is Hiromi Higuruma's Deadly Sentencing that forces his opponent into a trial.

3. Incomplete Domains

An incomplete domain is one where the user expands the domain with only his cursed energy without infusing it with its cursed technique. Even if these domains would include a barrier to it, the domain will still be considered incomplete as the only output here will be the user receiving a buff in their cursed energy m As there is not cursed techniques infused with the domain, the user will not be granted with a sure to hit attack to engage with his opponent.

Drawbacks

While domain expansions are one of the strongest attacks on Jujutsu Kaisen, it also has a huge drawback. A domain expansion requires the user to use an immense amount of cursed energy which makes this a high-risk, high-reward maneuver. Throughout the series we have only seen Satoru Gojo and Sukuna use their domain expansions multiple times in a day. Apart from the two as of now we have seen Kinji Hakari using it multiple times only after hitting his domain's jackpot to replenish cursed energy. Another drawback of this technique is that after the expansion is over the users innate technique to become unstable for a short time afterward, even if the domain was not fully formed. At that moment the user loses his ability to perform his/her cursed technique for a short period of time

Countermeasures

While it was earlier mentioned that domain expansion is a guaranteed hit attack for the user. there surely is a way to counter this. One of the methods of countering a domain expansion is by the help of cursed energy reinforcement, which although is an impractical method but is useful against some domains. One of the true defenses that can be used during a domain expansion would be using anti-domain techniques.

While the above method is only useful for those who cannot perform a domain expansion, for ones who can they can challenge their opponents domain with their own. This maneuver is called the Domain Clash. Under this the users domains clash and the one which is more refined will dominate the other and will win the clash. An example of this clash was shown between Jugo's domain expansion which was countered by Satoru Gojo's domain expansion. With Gojo's Infinite Void being more refined and superior to Jugo's expansion, Gojo won the Domain Clash, gaining control over Jugo.

While domains are nearly impossible to run away from or escape from the inside, there is still a way to escape this nightmare of a technique. It is noted that any complete domain has the user's innate ability infused to the domain having a sure to hit attack available for them. But it is also noted that the more refined and reinforced from the inside even, the weaker it is from the outside. In such situations, having an Ally outside to break the domain for rescue is not a bad Idea.
