Jujutsu Kaisen needs no introduction for the anime and manga community. The 2018 magnum opus of Gege Akutami has long established itself to be one of the best shonen series to come out in the last decade, since the anime adaptation arrived on screen on October 2020. The series has graced the fandom and the anime community in general with a plethora of iconic characters like Gojo, Nanami, and Itadori, all of whom have marked their places in today’s pop culture.

Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen is upon us, with less than two months until the premiere of its first episode on July 6, 2023. On that note, let us finally take a moment to discuss what the title of the series actually means.

What is the meaning of the title Jujutsu Kaisen?

Let us take it word by word first. The word “Jujutsu”, which is written with the two kanjis 呪 which means curse or sorcery, and 術, which means art or technique. The second word Kaisen, written with the kanjis 廻戦, means fight or combat. The title thus means ‘battle of curses’ or ‘sorcery fight’.

Viewers and readers are already familiar with the elemental concept of curses in the story and how jujutsu sorcerers strive to exorcise them. Thus, the title ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ is nothing but a straightforward nod to that same basic idea of the plot.

In the manga canon, the term 'jujutsu' refers to anything related to a curse and is believed to have been derived from the term Jujutsushiki which refers to the use of cursed techniques we see the sorcerers employ against the curses. The actual Japanese word Jujutsu on the other hand is a type of close combat martial arts, something we also see in abundance in the story.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will be nothing short of an electrifying visual experience

Season 2 is drawing near and is all set to pick up the series from the Gojo’s Past arc, where we will get a closer look at Geto Suguru and Gojo’s friendship, a glimpse of which the anime watchers have already been presented with, in the 2021 movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The arc will also introduce a number of important characters in the manga, out of which Toji Fushiguro has already begun stealing all the thunder especially after his official anime art design was released in December last year.

The wait is almost over for the much-anticipated season 2, which MAPPA promises, will be nothing short of an electrifying visual experience that will bring the narrative closer to some of the most epic events of the manga.

Fans wanting to binge the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen to refresh their memory before jumping on to season 2, can stream it on Netflix and Crunchyroll. However, the series will not be available on Netflix after June 2, so make sure to check it out as soon as possible. Here is how the show is summarized on the official website of Crunchyroll:

"Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna."

It adds:

"Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses... and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back."
