What is a Sternritter in Bleach TYBW? Explained

Bleach TYBW fans have this question, "What is a Sternritter?" since the arc added a lot of new lore and information regarding the Quincy race. The fans have gotten used to a simpler idea of the Quincy because they've only been exposed to Uryu Ishida and his father Ryuken throughout the series. But Yhwach and his men have now given them a whole new level.

The German term for "Star Knights"—they are the main antagonistic force the Shinigami have to face during Bleach TYBW. They represent the strongest Quincy in Yhwach's Wandenreich army.

They are the main challengers for the vast majority of the main cast, mainly the Gotei 13 Captains, and have provided the series with a lot more variety as far as abilities and skill set goes with this race.

Bleach TYBW's Sternritter explained

As mentioned earlier, the Sternritter are the strongest Quincy warriors in Yhwach's Wandenreich army, who are often seen wearing tailor-made suits that differentiate them from the common soldiers. Moreover, they stand out because they have unique abilities and usually rank at a similar level to the Gotei 13 Captains of the Soul Society.

There is also a certain hierarchy among the Sternritter, with Yhwach having his own elite guard, known as the Schutzstaffel. The title of Sternritter Grandmaster belongs to Jugram Haschwalth, who is the Quincy King's right-hand man and the second in command when it comes to the remaining soldiers.

Haschwalth and the Schutzstaffel are also treated with higher esteem by Yhwach, sharing the stage with him when he makes an announcement.

Moreover, from a more personal perspective, the Sternritter are defined by a lot of in-fighting. As seen with a team from that organization, The Bambies, their leader, Bambietta Basterbine, was defeated by Sajin Komamura. There are also examples such as Bazz-B, whose entire reason for joining the Wandenreich was to take Yhwach's life and was never loyal to him.

Another reason why a lot of fans have questions about Sternritter is because author Tite Kubo introduced the concept of the Schrift in Bleach TYBW. It is an ability that every Sternritter has and can only be awakened by Yhwach himself, which also leads to each member gaining a letter from the English alphabet, such as Candice Catnipp gaining the "T" for "The Thunderbolt".

Each Sternritter has to go through the Engraving Ritual, which is drinking a cup of Yhwach's blood, as shown in the arc when Uryu Ishida goes through that process to unlock his Shrift. This power can be further strengthened by the use of the Quincy: Vollständig, which could be viewed as an equivalent of a Shinigami's Bankai, improving their power and gaining access to abilities they didn't have before.

Final thoughts

It is normal to watch or read Bleach TYBW arc and have questions about Sternritter and how it is any different from a regular Quincy. In many ways, they could be viewed as the Gotei 13 Captains of Yhwach's Wandenreich and the strongest members of their race.
