With Tower of God season 2 finally reaching its end in the coming weeks, many are taking the opportunity to switch to or prepare to begin reading author and illustrator SIU’s original manhwa. This has led to fans learning of or experiencing for themselves the return of several characters to the storyline, such as Hansung Yu from season 1’s events.
However, many fans were left asking, “Who is Hansung Yu in Tower of God?” due to the character having been gone for such a significant amount of in-series source material. Hansung Yu is an Advanced Ranker who works on Evankhell’s test floor, hiding his true identity as a high–ranking FUG member and eventually helping to fake Bam’s death.

Hansung Yu’s role in Tower of God
While that briefly answers the question of “who is Hansung Yu in Tower of God,” expanding on his role in the series is key to understanding his character. Little is known about his pre-series origins, but he’s shown to be a ruthless FUG member willing to do anything to achieve the group’s goals. His actions in season 1 as they relate to Bam primarily highlight this, with early season 2 also expanding on the cruel torture he put Bam through.
Essentially, Hansung Yu set up Bam being forced to join FUG and become Slayer Candidate Jue Viole Grace, threatening to kill his friends if he didn’t comply. Hansung Yu doesn’t reappear until the Hidden Floor section of The Hell Train Arc. However, this is a data version of him that is representative of him as a D-rank Regular. While this is considered a different version of Hansung Yu, he primarily serves as an ally to Bam during his time on the Hidden Floor.
The real Hansung Yu reappears during The Last Station Arc, escaping the Testing Floor with Evankhell after being targeted for execution by Jahad’s Army. The two eventually make their way to the titular Last Station and assist Bam in successfully escaping the clutches of Kallavan, a High Ranker, and Zahard’s Army. Hansung Yu and Evankhell then spend two years helping Bam train to the level needed to rescue his master and Hansung Yu’s FUG peer, Jinsung Ha.
Hansung Yu’s presence in Tower of God Part 3, which begins two years after The Last Station Arc, persists for a majority of its events. This begins with the fight against Jahad’s Army at the Nest, leading into the conflict with Lo Po Bia Yasratcha, and even the fight against Lo Po Bia Traumerei, the Lo Po Bia Family Leader. However, Hansung Yu was split up from Bam after this fight, resulting in a minimal contribution to the story since then.
Hansung Yu’s powers and abilities, explained
Further fleshing out the answer to “Who is Hansung Yu in Tower of God” are his abilities and powers in-series. While Hansung Yu is technically an Advanced Ranker, he was offered a High Ranker position and turned it down. In other words, he is effectively a High Ranker in terms of strength and skill. Hansung has also developed his own shinsu control style, being a Wave Controller primarily and an incredibly powerful one at that.
While a Wave Controller primarily, he’s capable of fulfilling all positions. He is also an Anima who can control and command Shinheuh, evidenced during his confrontation with Lo Po Bia Ren during season 1’s events. As a Regular, Hansung Yu was also said to be a very rare genius even among the Ten Great Families. Overall, everything that’s known about Jinsung Ha considers him to be an incredibly strong and gifted fighter.
In summation
Hansung Yu is an Advanced Ranker who is as strong as a High Ranker, but declined the position in order to achieve goals for FUG on Evankhell’s test floor. This is how he meets and fakes Bam’s death in order to induct him into FUG as Slayer Candidate Jue Viole Grace. Hansung Yu and Bam eventually become allies once again, this time with Bam taking the lead rather than being controlled by Hansung Yu and FUG again.
