Guts from Berserk

Guts is the main protagonist of Berserk. He is also known as the Black Swordsman because he carries a very long black sword. He was once a member of Band of the Hawk when Griffith asked him to join the group, who later became his enemy after being reborn as Femto.

Guts is the pivotal character in the Berserk series, written by Kentaro Miura, the creator of the manga. After he passed away on May 6, 2021, his best friend Kouji Mori took over the writer role and did justice to the ongoing manga, which is based on a dark theme.

Guts’s Background

Guts is the name given to him because he was born from his dead mother, a woman who was hung when he was in the womb. A woman named Shisu found him and adopted him, but when Guts turned three years old, Shisu died due to the plague which made him stay with Gambino, who was Shisu's husband.

Gambino didn’t want to take care of Guts, so he made him do work and taught him how to fight. Since a very young age, Guts used a long sword to fight, which made him always use swords longer than him. When he was a teen, he used a 6-foot-long and 11/2-wide sword that did not even have a sharp edge to cut through things easily. One night, Guts was raped by Donovan because he gave Gambino three silver coins to have Guts for one night, and after that, Guts killed Donovan and also Gambino.

Guts’s Role in Berserk

Guts, after becoming known as a Swordsman, encountered Griffith and his group, Band of the Hawk. Casca tried to fight Guts, but he easily defeated her. Griffith then defeated Guts. Griffith also asked him to join the group, which he did.

From there, they rescued many people and fought against many demons, but after some time, Guts left the group. He also rescued Griffith from prison, but after he was reborn into Femto, Guts saved Casca, who suffered deeply, causing her mental illness. Guts's life has been unlucky as many times when he felt that he found peace with someone, they either died or turned against him.

Guts’s Abilities

Guts has amazing swordsmanship ability and superhuman strength, which is why he can swing a huge sword that can even cut through a dragon's skin. He has Berserker Armor, which is cursed, giving him extra strength but also putting him in a state where he loses humanity.

Guts’ fighting style is aggressive and direct, often charging headfirst into battle. He uses the size and weight of his sword, Dragonslayer, to deliver devastating blows that can cleave through armor and enemies alike. Despite his brute-force approach, Guts is also a skilled tactician. He uses his environment to his advantage and adapts his strategy to his opponent's weaknesses.
