Azami Kurotani is the spiral girl in the Uzumaki series.

Kirie Goshima's close friend, Azami was a transfer student from Midoriyama-Shi who had reportedly known her since roughly grade 10. At school, she was very popular; all the girls were jealous of her and all the boys wanted to go out with her.

Junji Ito is the creator of the psychological horror manga series Uzumaki. The show follows the residents of Kurôzu-cho, a fictional town under a spiral-related strange curse. As the plot goes on, Kirie and Shuichi witness firsthand how the spiral curse influences those in the surrounding area and gradually turns spirals into the centerpiece of their life.

What is Azami Kurotani’s story in Uzumaki?

One of Kirie Goshima's closest friends, perhaps since grade 10, Azami was a transfer student from Midoriyama-Shi. Not only did all the boys want to go out with her, but all the girls were jealous of her since she was so popular at school.

Ultimately, the girls began spreading rumors about Azami: that she was attracted to boys because of a scar on her forehead, and that she took advantage of this ability to make boys fall in love with her before losing them.

One day, Azami decides to meet Shuichi Saito, but Kirie is hesitant to allow her, stating that Shuichi turned antisocial and crazy following his parents' suicides. But Azami doesn't stop, and Kirie gives in. When they go to see Shuichi, he greets her at first, but his gaze immediately shifts when he realizes that the curse is starting to affect her. He collapses in fear and yells that Azami "is a spiral."

Kirie is much more shocked than Azami is, and they both walk away. From that point on, Azami starts stalking Shuichi. She spends hours at his house knocking on doors and finally talks her parents into letting her move into an apartment in Kurôzu-Cho so that she can pester him more frequently.

Azami is told to leave Kurôzu-Cho by Shuichi, who maintains that her scar is a spiral and that if she stays, she would perish. His warning goes neglected, and Azami's scar deepens into her face in an ever-growing spiral. One evening, exploiting the promise that they would go out together if Okada is successful, Azami persuades him to bring Shuichi to her in a park. Okada persuades Shuichi to meet him in the park by pretending to have a crush on Kirie.

But unlike Azami's plan, Kirie also shows up, and Shuichi calls her first to let her know what occurred. Azami rushes to the park to execute whatever it is she had planned to do to Shuichi, trying to talk Kirie out of her scheme by exhibiting her now-half-eaten face.

She confesses to Okada that she simply wanted Shuichi and that she had never planned to honor her pledge to him. Enraged, Okada removes her hat and hits her with it, only to discover that a Spiral had devoured part of her face.

Azami uses the Spiral to devour Okada while cackling. Just in time to avoid being devoured by her, Shuichi climbs a tree. When Kirie gets there, Azami is already being consumed and is completely gone from the scene. As the Spiral devoured Azami, she disappeared from the world.
