Jujutsu Kaisen's Choso emerged as a popular character soon after he was introduced. Fans gushed over his calm, indifferent, reserved personality, which was simultaneously quite attached and protective of his brothers. This was even when upon being incarnated, Choso told his two brothers that the three of them lived only for one another and that they were all one.
Although cast in a supporting role, he did not fail to seize the spotlight when given the opportunity. Moreover, he showcased just how powerful Blood Manipulation as a technique could be. But his time in the series came to an end when he was killed by Sukuna while attempting to protect Yuji, during the final arc.
Here's everything about Choso's death and why it was important.
Who killed Choso in Jujutsu Kaisen, explained
Choso died in the series by jumping in the way of Sukuna's Divine Flames. He was attempting to protect his brother Yuji, who had suffered a fatal blow— i.e., lost his foot due to Sukuna's slashes. Choso knew the outcome of what he was doing and how little of a chance he had at surviving, and was still prepared to do put himself in harm's way.
Prior to the final battle, he was trying to teach Yuji Blood Manipulation, but he was unable to explain how it worked and consequently got jealous when Noritoshi Kamo stepped in. Choso did what he did as a final act of service to Yuji, putting his life on the line to save the last one he could call family.
How Choso died
Choso's tragic end came in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 259 when he sacrificed himself to save his little brother, Yuji. The events that led to such a fate were as follows: after an explosive awakening, Yuji managed to push Sukuna on the backfoot, but the latter had recovered his Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT) through two Black Flashes of his own.
In retaliation, Sukuna used his Domain, Malevolent Shrine, and considerably damaged Yuji. With the pink-haired teen now pushed back, Sukuna prepared his infamous Divine Flames. Making the ultimate sacrifice, Choso jumped in between them and was almost instantly incinerated, leaving Yuji shattered.
The purpose of Choso's death
Choso's death was a significant event in the Jujutsu Kaisen storyline. Prior to the series' Final Arc, Choso had established himself as an important character. Although in a supporting role, he was still key to the series. Initially, he wanted to take revenge on Yuji for exorcising Ezo and Kechizu, but changed sides to fight selflessly for Yuji and his friends. His character development has been impressive.
Yuji's survival was, and is, vital to Team Jujutsu High's victory and Choso was well aware of the same. With the former at the time not having fully unlocked his potential and yet evolving, Choso knew he had to do something. Thus, he jumped in the way of Sukuna's Divine Flames, giving up his life for his brother and staying true to his words to Yuki.
As for the purpose of Choso's death, it fuels Yuji's path to victory. It resembles the Shibuya Incident, where Nobara Kugisaki's passing led to Yuji awakening 120% of his potential. In a similar fashion, aided by Todo Aoi, Yuji launched a full frontal assault on the Demon King, unleashing the pent-up rage from whatever he had been through.
