There are several reasons why Tower of God has been called the One Piece of manhwa. One of the major reasons behind that is its scope and how much mystery it has. Despite having been in serialization since June 2010, there’s still so much fans don’t know and haven’t seen when it comes to the titular structure and what lies within.

One such character who perfectly exemplifies this is Phantaminium, a vexing entity whose identity has been discussed but far from explored by the series. In Tower of God, Phantaminium is a mysterious, dangerous, and incredibly powerful Irregular who is canonically considered the strongest High Ranker in the series. This is exemplified by his rank of #1 amongst all current Rankers and High Rankers, beating out the likes of Jahad himself, Urek Mazino, and other similarly strong and statured figures. While this may seem unearned, there’s little to no doubt that Phantaminium is that powerful.

This power is likewise inherently tied to the answer of “who is Phantaminium” given his biggest action in the series so far. Phantaminium was said to have suddenly appeared in the Tower one day, breaching Jahad’s inner palace and committing a massacre likewise. The victims included high-level Rankers as Phantaminium went on to shatter every line of defense and even face Jahad himself.

However, he disappeared shortly thereafter, choosing not to fight Jahad despite going as far as to meet him. It’s said that he met Yuri Jahad of the Ha family on the way but didn’t kill her for a still unknown reason. These mysterious actions on his part likewise earned him the sobriquet “Riddle.” His fighting style also contributed to this, said to use a weapon and approach which had never been seen in the Tower before.

Further emphasizing how deserving he is of this sobriquet is the fact that there are no other confirmed sightings of him. Many are rumored, such as his having a cat-and-dog-esque relationship with fellow irregular Urek Mazino. It’s also rumored that he is the only one who can ascend to the 135th Floor, which is the first to lie beyond Jahad’s empire. Phantaminium is a unique kind of character known as an Axis User or Axis for short. The term comes from another of creator SIU’s works within the larger Talse Uzer Story (TUS). Per SIU, an Axis is someone with the power to influence a tale that is told within the larger TUS.

There are many Axes outside of the Tower, but as of this article’s writing, Phantaminium is the only known one in both the Tower of God series and the TUS currently. It’s said that Axis users can defeat each other and that the weakest Axis could defeat the strongest non-Axis. As the series’ Axis, Phantaminium is a force that has the responsibility of managing and authority to influence the story that unfolds.
