Shaka's assailant in One Piece explained
Shaka, also known as Punk-01, was one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying the aspect of "good." Shaka's personality was defined by reasonableness, calmness, and thoughtfulness, starkly contrasting him to some of his more antagonistic counterparts like Lilith.
Shaka disapproved of looting and pillaging, emphasizing that such actions were detrimental to a scientist's pride. Unfortunately, his character couldn't be fully explored since York assassinated him.
Shaka's loyalty to Vegapunk, the Stella, was unwavering. He believed it was their duty as satellites to ensure Vegapunk's safety, even at the cost of their lives. Despite his brief presence in the anime, his connection with Vegapunk and his interactions with significant figures like Monkey D. Dragon garnered him a substantial fan following.
In a tragic turn of events, Shaka was eliminated by York, who was revealed to be the traitor among the Vegapunk Satellites. Shaka discovered Stella's location in the old Devil Fruit Research Lab but was shot in the head by York before he could free the missing Cipher Pol agents and Stella.
Why York betrayed the Vegapunks?
York, another one of Dr. Vegapunk's satellites, embodies the aspect of "greed" in stark contrast to Shaka's embodiment of "good." Each satellite reflects a different facet of Vegapunk's personality, making them unique individuals with their own wills and desires. Initially appearing as a supportive contributor to the satellites' experiments, York harbored a secret wish to become a World Noble.
This dream drove her to plot the demise of her fellow satellites, believing that the world only needed one Vegapunk. York's greed led her to cooperate with the Five Elders, offering her scientific skills and access to technologies like the Mother Flame and Punk Records in exchange for elevation to the status of a Celestial Dragon.
Despite her initial shock at the monstrous Marcus Mars, she worked diligently to silence Stella's prerecorded broadcast, even reprimanding Mars for his reckless actions. York's determination to achieve her goals made her a valuable asset to the Elders. With his unwavering loyalty to Vegapunk and keen observance, Shaka became a significant obstruction to York's plans.
Realizing this, York eliminated Shaka to clear her path. In the old Devil Fruit Research Lab, Shaka discovered Stella's location but was assassinated by York. This ruthless act allowed York to continue her betrayal and further her scheme to become a Celestial Dragon.
