While mangaka Yuki Tabata’s Black Clover series has many unique characters and magic attributes, not many qualify in those regards like Charmy Pappitson does. Charmy’s two magic attributes are some of the most unique and inventive in the series, being Food Magic and Cotton Magic. However, her reveal of having two magic attributes also brought a major revelation of her origins and a new form likewise.

In turn, this has led many fans to ask “why does Charmy have two forms in Black Clover” once reaching the point in the series where Tabata includes this revelation. Charmy’s two forms come from her dwarf-human hybrid status, with her taller, more human-like form being triggered by her use of Food Magic in-series.

Charmy’s origins in Black Clover

As mentioned above, the answer to the question of “why does Charmy have two forms in Black Clover” lies in her dwarf-human hybrid status. Her transformation first came in chapter 194, when the elf Lira (in the body of Rill Boismortier) was fighting her. Charmy's transformation was triggered when Lira knocked her out, transforming the former into a taller human form as she stood up in recovery.

Lira likewise explains that she’s a dwarf-human hybrid, while Mimosa Vermillion explains that the dwarves were a separate, ancient race from elves. She added that they had unique skills, which likely explains Charmy’s unique Magic Attributes and her ability to transform. Unfortunately, as of this article’s writing, the series has yet to shed significant light on Charmy’s origins as a dwarf-human hybrid.

The only information fans know of Charmy’s pre-series origins comes in chapter 313 during Yami Sukehiro’s flashback sequence. As he remembers his life’s journey, the instances where he first met each of the Black Bulls appear.

In Charmy’s scene, she is trapped in some sort of magic cage, which Yami seems to have come upon. Unfortunately, a lack of dialogue here leaves no explanation as to how a dwarf-human hybrid exists in the current age.

The difference in Charmy’s forms, explained

While Black Clover chapter 194 doesn’t make it explicitly clear, the state in which fans are most familiar with Charmy is her dwarf form. This is her shorter form which gives her a much more chibi-like design and is also distinguishable for the fact that she has her hair up. It’s also the form that fans are first introduced to and see her take for a majority of the series, even after the reveal of her identity.

This form also has a telltale sign in that she primarily uses her Cotton Magic, which also includes the summoning of magical sheep. Likewise, her transformed state differs greatly in both appearance and magic. In her human form, she becomes much taller and more slender, and her character design is much more in line with the norm for the series. She also wears her hair down rather than up in a bun.

Likewise, her magic changes as well, becoming Food Magic rather than Cotton Magic. There’s also a change in her magic’s appearance as a result, with the sheep made in Cotton Magic becoming wolves as she begins using her Food Magic.

Likewise, whereas the sheep cook mana-restoring food, the wolves of Food Magic use their voracious appetites and ferocious mouths to devour other people's magic. This magic is then turned into mana for Charmy, which she’s able to use.

In summation

The answer to the question of “Why does Chamry have two forms in Black Clover” lies in her status as a dwarf-human hybrid. Unfortunately, fans don’t know the full context of her origins, meaning there’s little significant information on her hybrid status beyond that. However, there are at least some telltale signs to help differentiate which form she’s using at any point.
