Eri is one of the supporting characters of My Hero Academia but is often considered as a special character. Introduced during the Shie Hassaikai arc of the series, she became a key part of the plotline. More specifically, the medicine created through her quirk, the Quirk-Destroying Drug, was what made her special as it could eliminate any quirk just by inserting the medicine into any person.
Eri's Quirk had the ability to rewind the age of anyone, the power that Overhaul was after to secure it, he went as far as to kidnap her and sedate her guardian, who was also her boss. He continued his research and synthesized the Quirk-Destroying Drug that was used by the antagonists in key moments later on.

Why Eri is so special, explained
The Quirk-Destroying Drug is a substance that was created to destroy the quirks of others. The quirk was synthesized through the genetic material of Eri, the granddaughter of the boss of Shie Hassaikai.
The Shie Hassaikai organization was a Yakuza (mafia) organization that managed the criminals of the world. After the arrival of All Might, the organization became inactive and one of its employees couldn't bear with it. This was Kai Chisaki who later became known as Overhaul.
After witnessing the downfall of Shie Hassaikai, Chisaki recommended to his boss that they use Eri's body to produce a medicine that would potentially eliminate quirks.
Fearing his granddaughter might be in danger, the boss rejected Chisaki's plan. Chisaki became impatient and incapacitated his boss. He then took over Shie Hassaikai and started the development of the Quirk-Destroying Drug.
The Drug's first appearance was when Chisaki asked for help from the League of Villains and lured them into using the drug. The drug rendered Mirio's quirk useless when Overhaul injected his body with it.
Moreover, the quirk was also used against Aizawa but he cut off his limb before the effects of the drug could spread to his entire body. After Overhaul's loss, the League of Villains got their hands on the drug and Dr Garaki modified the drug to make it reverse the age of anyone. All for One showcased the new effects during the final war when his body transformed into a young one.
Eri's Quirk in My Hero Academia
Rewind is the quirk that was part of why Eri is so special in My Hero Academia. The quirk helped Eri rewind the age of anyone back in time. This meant that it was able to regenerate limbs, organs, and anything else that was impossible to recover medically.
Her quirk's working was showcased in the fight between Izuku Midoriya and Chisaki when she used her quirk to rewind the body of Deku and heal his arms. This helped Deku use his Full Cowl technique without damaging his limbs but as Eri wasn't able to control her quirk output, she had to be stopped by Aizawa's quirk.
Eri's role in the series
Eri played the role of someone who needed protection from the evil of society. Chisaki used her body to create a heinous substance without any approval from the girl. The girl also didn't have her guardian, her grandfather, with her during any of these experiments.
Izuku and Mirio had the chance to protect her before the Shie Hassaikai incident but as they hadn't seen the true face of Chisaki, they couldn't save her. However, during the fight against Chisaki, Izuku, and Mirio risked everything to protect her and save her from the claws Chisaki's claws.
After saving her from Chisaki, it was hard to make the shadow of Chisaki disappear from her but she was eventually able to overcome her fear and started smiling. After the 8-year time skip, she became a part of the music club at U.A. and Jiro became her mentor, as she was already a Pro Hero.
