Genya Shinazugawa has stolen the spotlight in Demon Slayer season 3, and for a great reason. We had never seen his abilities before, and his choice of weapon clearly shocked the entire fanbase. However, some may have wondered about his temper and why he is constantly agitated.

Given that he is a demon hunter who is constantly on the battlefield, anger and frustration are bound to be common emotions. That being said, he is quite different from other demon hunters in the Demon Slayer Corps. One of the most recent episodes covered Genya’s backstory, which is crucial in understanding more about this character.

Demon Slayer: Genya Shinazugawa’s backstory and relationship with his brother explored

Genya is Sanemi Shinazugawa’s only living sibling. When they were young, they had five other siblings and lived with their parents. However, their father was abusive and was disliked by plenty of people. One day, the father was stabbed by a person who hated him, and none of the family members were surprised. Despite being okay with their father’s death, Sanemi and Genya realized the difficulties their family would face.

Sanemi and Genya Shinazugawa, the oldest siblings, swore to protect their family and take care of them. A few days later, their mother didn’t return home after work. The entire family was anxiously waiting, and that’s when Sanemi went out to search for her. Their mother turned into a demon and killed all their five siblings in one go. Sanemi was desperate to save his brother and fought against his mother.

Sanemi succeeded in killing the demon. However, Genya’s vision was compromised when his siblings were attacked. The light source was destroyed, and his eye was scratched. He assumed that it was a wolf that had infiltrated their house.

When he saw Sanemi with a weapon standing next to his mother’s corpse, he assumed that he had killed their mother. Genya later revealed that he was panicking during that situation and blamed his brother. This caused a bit of a rift and the two parted ways.

Since then, Genya has been wanting to apologize to his older brother, and it was clear that the guilt was eating him alive. The only person who put his life on the line to save Genya was blamed and called a murderer.

Such a backstory has surely traumatized the sibling duo. Genya is always angry at others because of everything he has gone through in his early life. Every waking moment is an attempt to become stronger, even if it is at the expense of his life. He is doing this only for his brother to acknowledge him.

This is one of the main reasons why Genya is constantly angry and finds it incredibly hard to get along with other members of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Later on in the Demon Slayer manga, Genya dies to Kokushibo but plays a vital role in the Upper Moon 1 demon’s defeat. The Wind Hahsira confessed to his brother that he wanted him to marry a woman and live a happy life instead of becoming a demon hunter. The story surrounding the Shinazugawa brothers is soul-crushing and tragic, to say the least.
