Hunter x Hunter anime was quite popular when the first installment was released. The manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, instantly drew people’s attention. One of the reasons for this manga’s success was how Togashi created this world. Not only was it comprehensive, but it also featured a unique battle system that was a breath of fresh air when compared to other shonen titles.

That being said, the anime was stopped rather abruptly. Newer fans don’t seem to understand, and therefore, took to many social media platforms and forums to ask why the Hunter x Hunter anime ended before the manga. To briefly answer this question, the abrupt ending was due to the release schedule and the manga author’s declining health.

The Hunter x Hunter anime has two installations, and both adaptations ended abruptly. The first installation was released sometime in 1999. The manga began its serialization with Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine in 1998.

The first-ever anime adaptation debuted one year after the source material’s serialization. Nippon Animation produced the 1999 anime adaptation. The issue with such a release is that the anime will almost always cover multiple chapters in a single episode. Since this was the case, only four seasons were released on television.

Both the manga and the Hunter x Hunter anime (1999) had weekly release schedules. Naturally, the anime series caught up with the manga, so the anime was discontinued. This is also why many shonen anime adaptations with schedules similar to the manga series often release filler episodes.

Series like Dragon Ball and Naruto are infamous for filler episodes. However, HxH only had two filler episodes, and it finally came to a stop.

The fanbase was quite excited after another anime adaptation was released in 2011. Madhouse produced this Hunter x Hunter anime adaptation. This studio is an industry titan that worked on some of the most iconic anime titles, such as One Punch Man and Death Note. This version went on for three years, concluding its run in 2014. It had a total of six seasons.

The reason why this adaptation ended was Yoshihiro Togashi’s declining health. The manga author has been battling debilitating back pain, which forced him to take a hiatus for many years.

Fortunately, the manga will return in October 2024, and this is all due to the efforts of Togashi’s team and his wife, Naoko Takeuchi, who is the author of Sailor Moon.

In conclusion, the first anime adaptation ended because it quickly caught up with the manga. The second adaptation, released in 2011, ended due to the author’s declining health. It is unclear when the anime will return, but fans hope the author prioritizes his health and recovers before he can resume work.

Stay tuned for more Hunter x Hunter anime and manga news as 2024 progresses.
