Tokyo Revengers has received much negative feedback from not just the anime and manga community but also from their own hardcore fandom. Following the manga's serialization and anime's ariring, the series gained a large and dedicated. Moreover, there were times when readers would eagerly await the manga's weekly updates with bated breath.

However, some of the fans fan of Tokyo Revengers became bitter since the story’s progression felt inorganic and the ending did not adhere to logic. Moreover, there were too many flaws in the manga series, and the fanbase voiced their opinion on the same on various social media platforms and forums as well.

Disclaimer: This article contains massive spoilers from the manga.

Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers had potential, but the efforts flushed down the drain with the plot inconsistencies

One of the biggest flaws of Tokyo Revengers was the concept of time traveling. This aspect of the story facilitated plot progression. Given its importance, one would assume that the mangaka would have paid more attention to how time travel worked in the series. However, the rules governing time travel were completely ignored, causing several plot holes in the story.

At first, Takemichi was able to time-leap, but the rules were vague yet defined at the beginning. However, the ending of the Tokyo Revengers manga completely ignored the very rules it defined.

Somehow, both Mikey and Takemichi were able to travel back in time with all their memories intact when Mikey had killed Takemichi. This allowed the duo to unify every single delinquent gang in order to avoid fights. The happy ending that every fan sought was achieved. However, it was done at the cost of plot inconsistencies and poor writing.

Moreover, the revelation of the second time-leaper was botched during the course of the series. Tokyo Revengers fans assumed that the second time-leaper would be either Sanzu or Shuji Hanma. However, it was revealed that Mikey’s brother was the second time-leaper. It almost felt like the writer created an alternate timeline only to make sense of this unexpected revelation.

Another aspect that seemed to have caused the manga to be far from enjoyable was Mikey’s Dark Impulse and its connection to Takemichi. As a concept, Dark Impulse wasn’t explored well, and fans didn’t really know what it entailed.

However, it was repeatedly hinted that Takemichi was the only one who could save Mikey from his Dark Impulses. Similarly, the way Tokyo Revengers was written seemed like the origin of Mikey’s Dark Impulses was triggered due to his toy airplane being broken. The origin of the narrative that Mikey will kill someone was traced to a toy being broken in the past, which seemed a bit of a stretch for the fanbase.

Another major factor that was detrimental to the series’ success during the earlier stages was the main character. Takemichi, as a protagonist, is someone who might not give up, but he spent a considerable amount of time complaining and crying. That is not to say that either of those things is bad, but readers expected a strong-willed character.

A different aspect that was unlikeable about the character was maturity. Given that he was an adult who was in child’s body, fans expected his behavior to be slightly more mature. However, it is easy to forget that it was an adult in that body since there was little to no difference between Takemichi's and his classmates’ behaviors.

As such, it becomes evident that the reason why the Tokyo Revengers manga is mocked by the fanbase is largely because of the inconsistencies that follows the series at almost every other significant juncture. Moreover, the poor characterization also contributes to fans' dislike for a series that was supposed to be more people-oriented than plot-oriented.
