Sakonji Urokodaki from the Demon Slayer series is an important character who influenced Tanjiro’s life considerably. He nurtured Tanjiro’s talent initially, hoping that he could see the kid turn his life around after losing his entire family.
One can feel the warmth and care he provided for the Kamado siblings early in the series. His impact cannot be overstated while he might not have received much screen time in the anime series.
There was one scene in particular where the former Water Hashira got emotional. This led to an important question among new fans - why did Sakonji Urokodaki cry in the Demon Slayer series? He was emotional because Tanjiro Kamado came home safely, and Nezuko woke up from her long slumber.
Understanding the reason behind Sakonji Urokodaki’s emotions in the Demon Slayer series
Sakonji Urokodaki cried upon Tanjiro’s arrival because he suffered the loss of many students to the Final Selection exam. Sakonji Urokodaki taught Tanjiro Kamado the basics of the Water Breathing Technique. He took it upon himself to teach the young boy how to fight before the Final Selection.
What new fans of the series don’t know is that the examination is a source of many bitter memories for the seasoned teacher. The Final Selection examination is conducted to filter out and choose some of the best swordsmen to combat demons that are running rampant in the country.
The candidates must survive multiple days in a demon-infested area, and the ones who complete this task can join the Demon Slayer Corps. Sabito and Makomo were among the many students Urokodaki had trained. Tanjiro Kamado even managed to see their spirits while training to cut the massive boulder. It was later revealed that Sabito and Makomo were deceased, which surprised Urokodaki.
It turns out that the Hand Demon had killed a total of 13 students who trained under Sakonji Urokodaki. As a teacher, he must wait anxiously for days on end, only to realize that his students died during the exam. This takes a massive toll on a teacher, and Urokodaki was no exception. When Tanjiro returned to him safely, he was overwhelmed with emotions. He was extremely happy to see the young boy persevere.
Additionally, Nezuko woke up years after entering her slumber. He was worried that Tanjiro might be unable to help his sister. However, seeing the Kamado siblings unite after a grueling few years made the proud teacher quite emotional.
In conclusion
Sakonji Uroodaki was emotional because he didn’t have to suffer the loss of another student. He also wanted to see the Kamado siblings join the Corps and find a cure for Nezuko to turn her back into a human being. He was quite happy to see the siblings unite, and it was quite clear that the teacher was overwhelmed with joy. These are the main reasons the former Water Hashira was seen crying in the anime series' first season.
