While Wignall and Ellenor belong to the elven race, their backstory in Wistoria: Wand and Sword suggests why their relationship is the perfect foil to Will Serfort and Elfaria's bond. In episode 9 of the anime adaptation, Wignall recalls a terrifying memory from his childhood, where he was shunned by his elven community, including Ellenor Ljos Alf (the current Elf Queen & the Fairy Magia Vander).

The nightmare teased the elf's backstory, which isn't completely different from Will Serfort's. Like Will, who gets ridiculed for his lack of magic, Wignall is also looked down upon by his elven brethren due to his inability to cast powerful illusions.

Likewise, Wignall's relationship with Ellenor is also a striking parallel to Will and Elfaria's bond. Yet unlike Ellenor, who rejected Wignall, Elfaria longs to see his friend in Mercedes Caulis. That makes Wignall and Ellenor's backstory a major foil to Will and Elfaria's relationship.

Exploring Wignall and Ellenor's backstory in Wistoria: Wand and Sword and how it's the perfect foil to Will and Elfaria's bond

Wistoria: Wand and Sword episode 9 shows Wignall Lindor, the elven mage, in a new light. After falling into the dungeon's depths with Will, he recalls a nightmare from his childhood, where the other elves, including Ellenor, rejected him. The Elven queen in her childhood also cut off Wignall's left hand, when he reached out to him.

So, what sort of relationship do Wignall and Ellenor share, and why is it similar to Will Serfort and Elfaria's dynamics? According to Wistoria: Wand and Sword manga, Wignall and Ellenor used to live together as foster siblings. As they grew up together, Wignall developed a brotherly affection to protect his sister.

He thought he needed to be there for her no matter what. However, Ellenor was one of the High Elves with incredible magical powers. She could create the Kingswood, one of the ultimate feats of an elf, with ease. One day, the High Elves noticed Ellenor's magical ability and decided to take her away. Eventually, she became a Magia Vander.

Wignall practiced day in and day out to reach his foster sister's level, but he failed. Unlike other elves who could turn illusions into reality, Wignall Lindor's magical illusions had no physical form. As a result, the other elves mocked him, calling him a disgrace to their race.

Eventually, they shunned him, including Ellenor, his foster sister. She cut off his arm with magic, called him a disgrace and left. Since then, Wignall considered himself a failure. While he's one of the top three students at the Rigarden Academy, the elven mage knows his actual worth.

Evidently, Wignall's backstory with Ellenor has definite parallels to Will Serfort and Elfaria's past. Will and Elfaria grew up together at an orphanage and shared a special bond. Much like Ellenor, Elfaria was a gifted mage, who excelled in magic.

She created El Glace Frosse, a collection of twelve ice spells, to become the youngest Magia Vander. Meanwhile, Will Serfort was ridiculed for not having any magic. His classmates at the Rigarden Academy constantly abused him and treated him differently from the rest.

Yet, their criticism didn't bog down Will. Instead, he channeled it into his strength and gave it his all to reach closer to Elfaria. In other words, Will and Wignall share the same fate and same dreams: to climb the tower and meet the person they adore.

However, as mentioned, there's one aspect that sets them apart: Elfaria Albis Serfort never looked down upon Will. Unlike Ellenor, who cut off his brother's arm and rejected him, she embraced Will despite others calling him a "No-talent." She knew Will's undaunting will could never be broken. That's why, she supported him to the fullest.

Ellenor's words and actions were harsh toward Wignall in the past, but chapter 41 of Wistoria: Wand and Sword manga reveals the elven queen acknowledges her brother as an elf. However, that still doesn't justify her previous actions. As a result, Ellenor and Wignall's bond highlights a parallel side to Will and Elfaria's relationship, acting as a foil.
