Wistoria: Wand and Sword episode 1 recap
The episode begins with a beautiful view of the Rigarden Magic Academy, where mages reign supreme. However, Will Serfort, a bespectacled boy, cannot cast any magic spells.
Yet, he strives to become a Magia Vander and keep the promise made to his childhood friend, Elfaria. Since he cannot use magic, Will hones his skills as a swordsman in a dungeon and earns credits at the academy.
Edward Serfens, one of the professors at Rigarden Magic Academy, humiliates Will for his inability to use magic. Besides him, Theon Ulster, the son of a noble, also mocks Will. He showcases his superiority as a mage by casting a powerful spell.
Only Colette Rowal sees the kind side of Will Serfort and even defends him from Ulster's remarks. Will and Colette share a moment, as the former looks at the sky and thinks it's a beautiful day.
The episode then sets up the lore behind the anime. It is revealed that once upon a time, mankind was confined in darkness and was under threat from the "Invaders from the Heavens." The five strongest mages rose against them.
They repelled the invaders, cast a seal upon the sky, and freed humanity from the constraints of darkness. Those five mages were given the title Magia Vander. Since then, the country's strongest mages have been awarded that title.
The Magia Vanders live above the sky, watching over everyone. Following that, the episode delves into a flashback, where Will is seen making a promise to Elfaria that they will become Magia Vanders one day.
It is revealed that Elfaria broke the record by becoming the youngest mage ever to become Magia Vander. Will curses his luck for not being able to keep his promise, but he doesn't bog down.
Professor Workner summons him and reprimands him for venturing into the risky dungeons alone for credit. He brutally reminds him of the reality that he cannot become a Magia Vander unless he can learn magic.
Workner further tells him that he needs to pass the tests at Rigarden as well. Yet, unlike Edward, Workner acknowledges Will's determination. He reveals to him the location of a monster, that can help him earn four credits, something that he needs to advance to next year.
Interestingly, Ulster eavesdrops on their conversation. He goes to the sixth floor of the dungeon with his two friends. However, the boy and his team confront a stronger monster than they hoped for.
Ulster's magic spells don't work on the monster, and he realizes his death is imminent. However, Will Serfort saves him in the nick of time. The boy demonstrates his exceptional swordsmanship as a non-conformist in a world governed by magic.
Edward goes to Workner's office to enquire about Ulster and his friends. The bespectacled professor assures him that there won't be any danger since Will is at the location. He reveals how the boy is the only warrior in a world of magic.
The episode showcases Will Serfort's furious attacks, as he decimates a powerful monster, worth ten credits. Even though he rescues Ulster at the end, the boy gets rebuked by Workner. At the same time, he awards Will ten credits and acknowledges his efforts.
