Yakuza Fiancé episode 1 aired on October 7, 2024, and marked the premiere of one of the few crime romantic dramas airing in 2024. The anime is currently available on Crunchyroll for international streaming. The first episode depicted Yoshino's first meeting with Kirishima, along with the reveal of his violent tendencies.

The anime is being adapted from the manga and currently has a pace of two chapters per episode. Episode 1 covers exactly two chapters of the manga, so those who want to read ahead into the story can start from chapter 3 without skipping over any integral panel.

Yakuza Fiancé episode 1 started with Yoshino confronting her grandfather, Renji, over an arranged marriage between her and Kirishima Miyama, the grandson of a rival yakuza family. Despite her strong objections, Renji encouraged her to give Kirishima a chance, believing their union would bring peace between the warring factions of Kanto and Kansai.

Yoshino reluctantly agreed to meet Kirishima at the Miyama household in Tokyo. She was surprised by Kirishima's politeness and attentiveness but felt uncomfortable with his overly familiar behavior. While exploring the household, Kirishima tried to charm her, and she grew curious about his seemingly kind nature. However, a few days later, she witnessed him return home covered in blood, casting doubt on his true character.

As Yoshino adjusted to life in Tokyo and began attending school, rumors about her relationship with Kirishima spread. Despite feeling uneasy, she couldn't help but notice Kirishima's popularity and indifference to others' judgment. However, a confrontation with a group of men in the street revealed Kirishima's violent side, leaving Yoshino unsettled by his ruthless nature and the tattoos symbolizing his much deeper yakuza ties.

Kirishima's attitude shifted after this incident, and he coldly suggested that Yoshino either sell her body or leave Tokyo if she had no value to him. Hurt but determined, Yoshino disappeared for two weeks, returning with a bag of money and revealing that she sold her kidney for four million yen.

Yoshino's resolve to stay in Tokyo and fight back stunned Kirishima, who, to Yoshino's disgust, confessed his love for her and begged her to ruin his life. The episode closed with Gaku Miyama, Kirishima’s father, subtly addressing the tension building within their families.

Yakuza Fiancé episode 1, adapted by Studio Deen, is one of the few Yakuza-related romance series to air in recent years, with Nisekoi from 2015 being the most notable previous entry. The entire first episode faithfully adapts the first two chapters of the manga without skipping a single panel.

The characters' demeanor, mannerisms, and voice acting perfectly capture the essence of their counterparts from the original manga. While Studio Deen has garnered a shaky reputation for its adaptations of Re:Monster and the later seasons of Seven Deadly Sins, the production quality of Yakuza Fiancé episode 1 shows no such issues.

The animation and direction remain solid, delivering a polished visual experience. The romance and setting of this series are undoubtedly among the most unique to emerge recently. One of the involved characters is genuinely twisted, adding a darker layer to the typical romantic dynamic.

Although Yakuza Fiancé has yet to gain mainstream popularity beyond its niche fanbase, its similarities to Nisekoi's setting and its distinctive protagonists suggest that it could become a standout romance anime in the Fall 2024 lineup.

Final thoughts

Yakuza Fiancé episode 2 will be released on October 14, 2024, and will be available for streaming as part of Crunchyroll's Fall 2024 lineup. Episode 2 will adapt Yoshino and Kirishima's evolving relationship dynamic as they come to terms with their true natures.
