On July 20, 2024, during the Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro's 5th anniversary, Your Name creator Makoto Shinkai praised Too Many Losing Heroines on a panel. The anime series is being compared to the anime director's film projects after the first episode, and a fan finally asked him his thoughts on how this anime could portray the same feelings as his work.
Even though the author didn't consider the anime exactly like his work, he praised it for its 'unique' fan service, which the director considered necessary as this is an every film project of his. Moreover, the series also portrays the direction and animation style of the director, which the fandom appreciated on the internet.

Your Name director Makoto Shinkai appreciates the uniqueness of Too Many Losing Heroines
Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro celebrated its fifth anniversary, and on this occasion, they screened Weathering With You for one week. Its premiere date coincided with its fifth-anniversary date. The film's director was also interviewed on occasion and when he was asked questions about his films. He was also asked about a certain anime that is airing this Summer season of 2024.
Makoto Shinkai was asked about the anime Too Many Losing Heroines. A fan asked the director about the scene in the anime's first episode where Anna, the female protagonist, drank through the same straw as her childhood friend, whom she had a crush on. The fan claimed that this scene was very Shinkai-like, hinting that the director is fond of including such scenes.
The director laughed at the question and said he didn't know if this scene in Too Many Losing Heroines wasn't entirely Shinkai-like but agreed that it was amazing. The author continued by saying that scenes like this, which portray f*tishism, are a must in anime, and despite the dislike from a part of fandom, the director is still fond of including these scenes.
The director mentioned a scene from his latest film, Weathering With You, where Suzume sat on top of Souta, a chair at that moment, portraying the f*tishism in his movies. Moreover, in Your Name, there is another scene where Taki, the male protagonist, drinks a pint of sake, which is actually a mixture of rice and Mitsuha's saliva.
Reactions from the fandom
Although the author's appreciation was on another aspect, the fandom picked up another aspect of Too Many Losing Heroines, similar to the anime director's movies: the animation. The fandom claimed that anime's visuals made it seem like the director was involved in the series, even though he wasn't.
Moreover, one fan pointed out the staff behind the anime, which is the same as the famous romcom anime Kaguya-sama: Love is War. Another fan pointed out that the first episode of Too Many Losing Heroines was the only one that resembled Shinkai Makoto's work, and the second one didn't have many visuals.
"The backgrounds are so high quality that they really could be in one of his movies" one fan said
"Yeah, the first episode is really special animation-wise. Second episode not as much, but still very nice." another fan said
"The Kaguya sama staff never disappoints." another fan claimed
"This one is really good bro" another one said
Final thoughts
As mentioned in our review of the first episode of Too Many Losing Heroines, the anime's direction and background design were reminiscent of Shinkai films. Moreover, the fanservice element was also a big part of what made this anime similar to the famous director's films.
The anime started at the bottom this season because most people weren't aware of it, but things could change now that such a big animation director has approved of the anime's greatness.
