Yuji has stolen Megumi's true Trump Card in Jujutsu Kaisen, but it's completely justified

Megumi and Yuji were the first characters introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen, and the manga, being a shonen, quickly established them as "rivals." Although the manga hasn't explicitly explored the idea of them being rivals like other shonen, their feats and continuously growing power levels have managed to establish their direct rivalry.

Although many consider Megumi to be stronger than Yuji simply because Yuji will lose against Mahoraga, it is important to note that such a scenario cannot be used to compare their power levels.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji's was always higher than Megumi's

Megumi Fushiguro has been repeatedly established as a prodigy due to his ability to assess enemy techniques, patterns, and weaknesses, all while coming up with proper countermeasures. This was further accentuated in his fight against Dagon, where he devised a plan to survive Dagon's domain, and later when he defeated Reggie Star.

While those instances might have been prominent indicators of Megumi's potential, his status as a prodigy was solidified when he managed to become the youngest sorcerer to have achieved a Domain Expansion.

Although his Domain Expansion was incomplete due to Megumi not having the capability of constructing a barrier, it still made him the youngest sorcerer to achieve this feat. Gojo achieved his domain sometime in his second year or late third year after having his "awakening," and Yuta had a similar feat of achieving a domain and his special grade status along with it in his second year.

While this feat was the sole thing establishing Megumi's capabilities above Yuji's, Yuji took over that position in chapter 264 by using a Domain Expansion with an actual barrier. This is further emphasized by the fact that Yuji's domain presumably took down Sukuna.

Many might argue that Yuji had more training with the soul swap technique and that his special physiology, being a pseudo-Death Painting, and being soaked in Sukuna's cursed energy, all contributed to Yuji becoming strong. It should however be noted that Megumi was a sorcerer and knew about sorcery ever since he was a toddler. This, along with his being trained by Gojo and having an inherited cursed technique, evens out the playing field for a comparison between him and Yuji.

Unlike Megumi, Yuji did not receive an inherited cursed technique. He simply started his life as a sorcerer at the age of 14-15 and had spent less than two years being one. While Yuji eventually becoming stronger than Megumi was expected by the entire fandom, it is almost confirmed that Yuji is simply better and more determined than Megumi in terms of potential and actual sorcery.

Final thoughts

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 264 will be officially released on July 28, 2024, and will be available for reading on Shueisha's MANGA Plus platform. Although the manga has revealed Yuji's Domain Expansion, the actual specifications and the outcome of the entire Sukuna fight have yet to be revealed.
