Titled Jinbe's Confession - A Shocking History of the Fish-Men, the eleventh episode of One Piece Log – Fish-Man Island Saga aired on January 12, 2025. The remastered adaptation of the Straw Hat crew’s adventure in Fish-Man Island continues to entertain One Piece fans, and this episode in particular highlighted Roronoa Zoro’s overwhelming strength as the iconic swordsman annihilated the arc’s main villain Hody Jones.

Aiming to raid Fish-Man's Ryugu Palace, Hody took a huge amount of Energy Steroids, i.e., performance-enhancing substances that increased his strength many times over. Zoro stepped in to halt him, but he found himself underwater, the most favorable possible environment for a Fish-Man like Hody, as water exponentially boosts the combat strength of the members of this aquatic race.

Underwater, a human’s power is halved, while a Fish-Man’s is doubled. Despite the significant environmental disadvantage and the additional boost that Hody received from his Energy Steroids, Zoro effortlessly crushed the villain. Zoro outclassed Hody Jones underwater and defeated him with a single blow, highlighting the results of his training under Dracule Mihawk.

As Hody Jones crushed part of Ryugu Palace, flooding the edifice in the process, Zoro stepped in to prevent the situation from degenerating. That said, by this time the room was completely flooded, which led Usopp and Brook to understandably wonder what Zoro could do against a powerful Fish-Man in an underwater battle.

Self-confident with the environmental advantage and the further power boost from the Energy Steroids, Hody attacked Zoro, but the number two of the Straw Hat Pirates easily dodged or blocked all of the Fish-Man’s violent assaults. Moments later, the battle was already over as Zoro defeated Hody, taking him down with a single blow.

Zoro performed a fast technique to move past his opponent and cut him down in the blink of an eye. He unsheathed and re-sheathed his sword before Hody could do anything, leaving the Fish-Man with a bad wound that bled profusely.

Seeing what had happened, Usopp gasped in amazement. As for Hody’s subordinates, they were in utter shock at the fact that a human could outspeed a Fish-Man underwater.

Granted, even with Hody Jones defeated, the situation remained difficult as Zoro, Usopp, and Brook didn’t have a bubble coating. Thus, they were destined to succumb due to the lack of air underwater. King Neptune tried to help the three Straw Hats escape, but his old back gave in before they could leave the place.

Meanwhile, Hody’s subordinates revived the evil Fish-Man by feeding him additional Energy Steroids. The re-energized Hody immediately swam towards Neptune, stopping the old monarch and capturing him along with the helpless Zoro, Brook, and Usopp, who could no longer breathe at that point.

Post-timeskip Zoro's aura was beastly

While in their natural habitat, the sea, Fish-Men are considered almost unstoppable as they can move freely underwater and even manipulate the water itself to perform powerful techniques. In addition to this, their speed and strength are doubled when they fight underwater, while the same environment reduces a human’s power by half.

Hody also took several Energy Steroids, and each pill of this performance-enhancing drug doubled his power for a further huge amp that was added to the environmental advantage. Even then, Hody didn’t stand a chance against Zoro. The green-haired swordsman beat the shark-like Fish-Man in a flash, completely outclassing him.

A recurring trait of One Piece is that no Straw Hat but Luffy can handle the main villain of the arc. Yet, franchise author Eiichiro Oda allowed Zoro to crush Hody, showing how much he respects the "Pirate Hunter".

Hody couldn’t land a single hit on Zoro, and couldn’t keep up with his speed, even though they were underwater, which would weaken Zoro while boosting Hody. All it took for Zoro to defeat Hody was a single strike, that left the Fish-Man critically injured and unable to fight anymore. Hody was only revived as his henchmen fed him further Energy Steroids.

Even at a distance of time, the wound that Zoro had inflicted on him hurt Hody so much that he was forced to overdose on additional Energy Steroids to ease the unbearable pain. The countless doping pills caused Hody to undergo a radical physical transformation.

In this form, Hody challenged Monkey D. Luffy. While Luffy dominated him, Hody was able to withstand some of the former’s attacks, including the Gum-Gum Red Hawk.

It’s safe to say that Zoro would destroy the ultimate form of Hody as easily as he did with the previous, considering that he won that fight by a large margin while holding himself back a lot. He didn’t even use Haki or one of his best techniques such as the Billion-Fold World Trichiliocosm or the Nine Sword Style: Asura.

Shortly after the fight with Hody Jones, Zoro did the same with Hyozo, a powerful Fish-Man mercenary that Hody had hired to increase his group’s might. Notably, Hyozo was strong enough to block a technique from Gear 2 Luffy without suffering any injury in the process.

On the same occasion, Hyozo was even able to successfully counterattack Luffy. In fact, Luffy acknowledged him as a strong fighter.

On top of this, Hyozo increased his power several-fold by taking so many Energy Steroids that his body underwent the same physical transformation as Hody. While a weaker form of Hyozo somehow kept up with Luffy and got his strength praised by the young pirate, Zoro effortlessly destroyed the same Fish-Man in his doping-enhanced form.

For the record, Zoro didn’t even take Hyozo seriously. He destroyed Hyozo’s swords without even paying attention to the latter’s moves and cut down the Fish-Man when he tried to sneak up on him. This time also Zoro didn’t even use Haki or one of his best techniques, and yet he still destroyed opponents who were somehow challenging Luffy himself.

The results of Zoro's training

These fights emphasized Zoro’s newfound strength, presenting him as a force to be reckoned with. The two-year timeskip rendered all of the Straw Hats exponentially stronger compared to before, but Luffy and Zoro’s training was particularly fruitful, as they had the luxury from learning directly from the likes of Silvers Rayleigh and, respectively, Dracule Mihawk.

Two years before the Straw Hat crew’s adventure in Fish-Man Island, Mihawk inflicted a crushing defeat on Zoro. On that occasion, however, “Hawk Eyes” noticed Zoro’s potential. When Zoro arrived on Kuraigana Island and knelt before Mihawk, begging the World’s Strongest Swordsman to train him, Mihawk was impressed by how Zoro swallowed his pride for the sake of helping Luffy.

For the following two years, Mihawk trained Zoro. Mihawk’s lessons were extremely harsh, as Zoro even lost his left eye during the training, but the effort was worth it as Zoro’s power skyrocketed. Fresh out of the two-year training, Zoro appeared to be a fighter already at the level of most Yonko commanders, especially considering his full power with Asura.

After outclassing Hody Jones and Hyozo, Zoro brutally beat Pica, who didn’t stand a chance against him despite his mountain-sized stone golem and full-body Armament Haki to boast. Zoro even blocked an attack from Issho “Fujitora”, pushing back the Admiral in the process.

Essentially, Mihawk’s training allowed Zoro to bulldoze through every challenge in the New World. Zoro didn’t need another power boost until he arrived in Wano, where he ascended to new heights by unleashing his Conqueror’s Haki and mastering the sword Enma.

One Piece author Eiichiro Oda honored Zoro’s training with Mihawk by marking the green-haired swordsman’s first appearance after the timeskip with a double spread showing him easily destroying a huge ship, just as Mihawk did in his introduction in the series. Of all the Straw Hats, this was only done with Luffy, who was reintroduced in a double spread that showed him using a Conqueror’s Haki blast to defeat some weaklings, as Rayleigh did when Luffy and the others met him.

Old scenes brought to a new splendor

Zoro returned in grand style after the timeskip, ready to shake the New World along with the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates. The overwhelming victory over Hody Jones emphasized the results of Zoro's training, and it was nice to see this short but intense fight in the anime remake of One Piece’s first post-timeskip arc.

The remastered visuals and improved graphics of One Piece Log – Fish-Man Island Saga allowed for a faithful adaptation of Hody Jones and Roronoa Zoro's fast-paced confrontation in the submerged Ryugu Palace. In particular, they rendered justice to Zoro’s incredible speed as he cut down Hody in a flash.

Looking forward to the return of the full-fledged One Piece anime, fans can admire iconic old scenes in a new light thanks to the Fish-Man Arc's re-edition. The improved, shortened pacing is one more reason to watch One Piece Log – Fish-Man Island Saga.
