Archery has been contested at the Asian Games since the 1978 Bangkok Games. At first, four events- men's and women's individual along with men's and women's team events- were incorporated into the quadrennial tournament. Later, many other events were included to the prestigious multi-sporting tournament.
Venue and Schedule for 2018 Asian Games
The Archery competition will take place from August 22 to August 28 at the GBK Archery Field, Jakarta.
Asian Games Archery 2018 Events
The Archery competition have five events in Recurve category - namely men's individual, men's team, women's individual, women's team and mixed team.
However, there will be only three events in the Compound category - men's team, women's team and mixed team competition.
In the 2018 Asian Games, the mixed team events in both recurve and compound categories are included for the first time in the history of the tournament.
In the Recurve category, each nation can enter a maximum number four men and four women athletes while each nation is entitled to a maximum a number of eight men and eight women in the Compound event.
2014 Asian Games Archery Results
Except for the eighth Asian Games when Archery was introduced in the multi-sporting tournament, South Korea has always dominated the medal tally in Archery.
Overturning four games deficit, South Korea's Oh Jin-hyek won six consecutive games to defeat China's Yong Zhiwei 6-4 in the men's individual recurve Archery final at the 2014 Asian Games. It was third consecutive gold for the nation in this event. China beat Malaysia in the men's recurve team final to win their only Archery gold medal in the 2014 games.
South Korea's Jung Dasomi had a comprehensive 7-1 victory over fellow compatriot Chang Hye-jin in the women's individual recurve Archery final to win the gold. South Korea bagged their third recurve gold beating China in the women's recurve team final.
India grabbed their maiden compound gold medal defeating the favourite South Korea 227-225 in a nail-biting men's compound team Archery final. South Korea grabbed the yellow metal by defeating Chinese Taipei in the women's compound team Archery final.
Favourites for Asian Games 2018 Archery
Going into the 2018 Asian Games, South Korea will be the clear favourite to grab the maximum number of gold medals in Archery.
South Korea's Kim Woojin and Lee Woo Seok will be the favourite to win the men's individual recurve Archery. They will team up to win the gold medal in the men's recurve team event after a disappointing bronze medal in the 2014 Incheon Games.
With fielding two previous Asian Games gold medal winners Chang Hye-jin and Jung Dasomi, South Korea will be the favourite to win the women's recurve team. The current world number one Chang Hye-jin is also expected to better her last edition’s silver-winning performance in the women's individual recurve event.
The current world number two, South Korea, is likely to win the men's compound team Archery event.
Currently ranked one in the world, India will be favourite to win the women's compound team Archery in the 2018 Asian Games. South Korea will also be in the contention to defend their gold medal successfully.
With mixed team event adding to both recurve and compound categories, South Korea will be the favourite to clinch the gold medal in both events.
