Archer Deepika Kumari was named Indian Sportsperson of the Year at the Indian Sports awards held by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) yesterday.
Other notable awards at the event included the Lifetime Achievement award, which went to legend Rahul Dravid, while cricketer Yuvraj Singh was named the Most Inspiring Sportsperson of the Year.
Badminton sensation PV Sindhu was recognised with The Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year award and Rani Rampal won the Comeback of the Year award. Devender Jhajharia bagged the Para-sportsperson of the Year honours.
Deepika’s accolade is thoroughly well-deserved, as the archery ace immortalised herself in the history books in 2013 by winning her sixth consecutive title at the 34th National Archery Championships.
In addition, in July, Deepika won the gold medal in the stage 3 of the Archery World Cup held at Medellin, Colombia, and secured her third silver in the FITA Archery World Cup in September.
The Indian women’s archery team was named the Team of the Year.
