Deepika Kumari and Abhishek Verma have managed to qualify for the Archery World Cup Final. The recurve and compound duo will be going to Mexico to take part in the competition that is to be held of October 24 and 25., the Times of India reports.
The former World No.1 will be hoping to return to the form that earned her the title. During her peak, she had won three consecutive silver medals in the World Cup finals between 2011-2013.
The 21-year-old had to wait till the semifinals of the ongoing Stage 4 taking place in Medellin, Colombia to see if Chinese archers Le Chien-Ying and Lin Shih-Chia would overtake her on points.
Deepika who has managed to gain 24 world ranking points will have nothing to worry about, as Shih-Chia and Chien-Ying will not be able to get past her.
Chien-Ying who can still take home the bronze medal will totally be able to amass 23 world rank points and make the cut for the World Cup. If she isn’t able to United State’s Khatuna Lorig will be the one to qualify for the last spot.
The other players who have qualified for the women’s recurve are Choi Misun and Ki Bo Bae from Korea, Kaori Kawanaka from Japan, Ana Maria Rendon from Colombia and Mackenzie Brown from the United States of America.
Verma like Kumari skipped the Medellin event after winning the World Cup Stage 3 in Wroclaw, Poland last month. Verma though qualified for the World Cup Final with 39 rating points.
The Delhi lad won the gold medal in the Men's archery team event and a silver medal in the men’s Individual for compound bows in the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon.
The other men who will be competing with Verman in the tournament are Mike Schloesser from Netherland, Reo Wilde from the United States of America, Martin Damsbo from Denmark, Demir Elmaagacli from Turkey, and Dominique Genet and Sebastien Peineau from France.
Indian women’s Archery team who won the silver medal in the World Archery Championships in Copenhagen this year will be hoping to keep up their good form in Mexico as well.
They gave Russia a good competition before choking in the last few sets. In the tournament that had taken the lead in the first two sets, but then lost the next two and lost tie-breaker by a solitary point when Deepika Kumari shot a nine.
