The Indian recurve mixed team, comprising Dhiraj Bommadevara and Bhajan Kaur, secured a bronze medal with a come-from-behind win at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya, Turkey on June 23, Sunday.
Furthermore, Dhiraj secured the bronze medal after defeating Italy’s Mauro Nespoli in the recurve men's bronze medal game. However, Ankita Bhakat couldn't make it big after suffering a loss to Alejandra Valencia of Mexico in the bronze medal match.
Notably, earlier the Indian mixed team suffered a loss to the eventual silver medal-winning team South Korea in the semi-final. However, in the bronze medal affair, the Indian mixed team put up an impressive show over the Mexican team, comprising Alejandra Valencia and Matias Grande, to win by 5-3
Moving into the details, it turned out to be a tough start for Dhiraj Bommadevara and Bhajan Kaur as they shot three 9s and one 8 in the first set to concede the points to Mexico, who shot two 10s and as many 9s.
However, the Indian team made a perfect comeback in the second set to shoot a perfect score of 40 (all four arrows scoring 10) and leveled the match at 2-2.
The third set was also exceptional as Bommadevara and Kaur began with 9s, but then shot 10s (X) to take the lead at 4-2. In the final set, Kaur and Grande were accurate with their shots Valencia shot a 10 and 8 and Bommadevara was also accurate with a 9 and an X to end the match with a 5-3 to grab the bronze medal.
Dhiraj Bommadevara bags bronze in individual recurve; Ankita Bhakat misses out
Moving to recurve individual matches, Dhiraj Bommadevara suffered a defeat over eventual gold medallist Kim Woojin from South Korea in the semi-final by 2-6. However, he stunned Mauro Nespoli from Italy in the bronze medal affair by 7-3 to add another medal to India’s kitty.
In the recurve women's individual event, Ankita Bhakat suffered a defeat to China’s Yang Xiaolei by 2-6 in the semi-final to make it to the bronze medal game. Unfortunately, Ankita continued to lose the momentum over Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia by 3-7 to miss out on the bronze medal.
