Atanu Das defeated Cuban international Adrian Andres Puentes Perez 6-4 in the round-of-32 of the men’s Archery individual event at the Rio Olympics 2016. The Indian will now face World no. 8 Lee Seungyun of South Korea in the round-of-16.
Atanu started the match with a 9, whereas Perez was able to shoot a 8. Atanu followed it up with another 9 but Perez struck a 10 to tie the scores. The Indian shot a perfect 10, in reply to which the Cuban hit an 8 to finish with 25 points as compared to Atanu’s 28.
Under a 2-0 deficit, Perez started the second set with an 8, to which Atanu replied with a 9. Perez’s second shot scored a 10 and Atanu replied with another 10. The third shot from the Cuban was an 8 and Atanu bagged another 10 to take the second set as well and take a 4-0 lead.
The third set started with Perez hitting a 9 and Atanu followed it up with a 9. The series of 9s continued as both Perez and Atanu scored 9 in their second shots of this set. The Cuban got another 9 and Atanu followed it up with only an 8 and handed the Cuban this set.
In the fourth set, Perez started with an 8 and Atanu replied with a 9. The Cuban bagged a 10 in his next shot and Atanu was able to reply with a 9 only. Perez got another 10 and Atanu was able to reply with a 9 only as the scores tied at 4-4.
The fifth and final set started with Atanu hitting a 9 and the Cuban followed it up with another 9. Atanu got a perfect 10 in his second shot as the Cuban got a 9. Atanu finished the match with a 10 to take an unassailable lead and the Cuban’s 10 in his next shot was of no value.
