Anjana Thamke, a 16-year-old from Nasik, has won the gold medal in the girl’s 800 metres competition at the 2nd Asian Youth Games being held in Nanjing, China. While doing so, she also recorded her personal best time of 2 minutes and 11.47 seconds.
The Nasik-born girl is coached by Vijender Singh who spotted Anjana in a school event in 2011. Impressed by her skill and dedication, he decided to take her under his guidance.
Having readily taken up Vijender’s offer, while speaking to Indian Express, Anjana had said: “Vijender sir came to Nasik and persuaded my parents, who were quite apprehensive in the beginning. They wanted me to stay at home and do some work.”
Anjana holds the national record in the 400 metres, 800 metres and 1500 metres categories of the under-17 section. She is one of the 90 Indian Athletes to take part in the 2nd Asian Youth Games. She is also an Anglian Medal Hunt athlete.
