Erriyon Knighton’s Athletic Career

Erriyon Knighton decided to go professional at the start of 2021 after signing a deal with Adidas while still a junior at Tampa's Hillsborough High School. Knighton effectively terminated his amateur athletic career at Hillsborough High School and made a smooth transition from high school to the life of a professional athlete, as he was placed third behind world champions Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek in the 200 meters event at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, which were postponed a year because of the pandemic. Moreover, he became the youngest male athlete to represent the United States in track and field since Jim Ryum at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The following year, Knighton set an unratified world junior record in the 200m event at the Louisiana State University Invitational in Baton Rouge, clocking in 19.49 seconds to break the record.

After graduating high school in May 2022, he competed in the USATF Outdoor Championships in June and took second place behind Lyles. A month later, he won the bronze at the World Athletics Championships, making history as the youngest 200-meter medalist and completing a U.S. sweep behind Lyles and Bednarek.
