Michael Norman is an American sprinter who holds the best time for the 400 meters clocked at 44.52 seconds indoors. His 400m time (43.45 sec) is jointly sitting in the 4th place which was set at Mt. SAC Relays in 2019. The former junior champion in 2016 (200 m and 4×100 meter relay) became a world champion three years later in 2022 after finishing 400m and 4x400-meter relay.
Norman came into the limelight after beating former US champion Justin Gatlin in a 200m semi-final heat during the 2016 Olympic Trials. However, he finished fifth and wasn't able to qualify for the Olympic team. At the World Junior Championships, he set a record of 20.17 sec in the 200m and bagged two golds. In 2018, the four-time NCAA champion created records in each of the runs that he made that year, including 400m and 4×400m relay indoor. The Gatorade Player of the Year (2015 and 2016) also has the Bowerman Award in 2018 for track and field. Norman is currently associated with Nike and professionally competes under the tutelage of Caryl Smith Gilbert and Quincy Watts.
How much time did Michael Norman take for 100m?
Michael Norman finished the 100m race in just 9.86 sec in his first 100m sprint during the event of AP Ranch High Performance in Texas, US in July 2020. After this performance, Norman went on to become only the second athlete to join the Sub 10s, 20s, and 44s club for the 100m, 200m & 400m sprints after Wayde van Niekerk. Norman left his coach Quincy Watts and went to John Smith, a specialized 100m coach however, he failed which ended his season in 2023. Norman's coach and nine-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis had the verdict that they are recruiting Norman for the 400m but as per his potential and ability, he is built for 100m.
He also had an agreement with coach Smith Gilbert for his possible switch to 100m if he can manage to clinch gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Norman hit the 9.86 sec in 2020 and broke records in three 100m races the following year without shifting focus from the 400m. If everything goes well, Norman could be a possible contender at the Paris Olympics in 100m. However, if he fails he would still have the chance to defend his 400m. Michael Norman is now setting his eyes on winning gold in 100m, 4x100m, and 4x400m at the Olympics 2024.
