Mo Farah has won the 5000 metres gold in the IAAF world championships held at Moscow in 13 minutes and 26.98 seconds today.
Farah has become only the second athlete, after Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, to hold the world and Olympic titles in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres. Only last week Farah had won the 10,000 metres race.
Lord Coe, a back-to-back Olympic 1,500m titles winner, was quoted as saying by The Guardian: “You have to say that Mo is at the very top of the heap but that will be beyond doubt if he wins the 5,000 and 10,000 double here.
Farah is now the Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, the world 5,000m champion and 10,000m champion.
On winning the 5000 metre race, Farah said: “All I was thinking about was my kids. I put so much hard work into it. Barry Fudge has been looking after me really well. The whole team around me. I never thought I’d achieve something like this in my career. I’ve got the right people around me.”
Silver went to Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet (13min 27.26sec) and bronze went to Isiah Koech of Kenya.
