Indian athlete Gulveer Singh has added another remarkable achievement to his name. He set a new national record in the men’s 5000m at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour in Niigata, Japan.
On Saturday, September 28, Gulveer clocked an impressive 13:11.82 to secure the gold medal, surpassing his previous record set earlier this year by over seven seconds.
Gulveer Singh's latest achievement further cements his position as one of India’s top long-distance runners. In June 2024, at the Portland Track Festival, he broke Avinash Sable’s 5000m national record with a time of 13:18.92 set by Sable in 2023.
Gulveer’s continuous improvement in his times showed his dedication and focus, although he still fell short of the Paris Olympic qualification standard by more than 13 seconds.
This record-breaking run adds to what has already been a landmark year for the 26-year-old. Earlier in March, Gulveer shattered another longstanding national record in the men’s 10,000m event at The Ten track meet in California, crossing the line in 27:41.81. This performance rewrote the 16-year-old mark of 28:02.89, set by his coach Surendra Singh in 2008.
Despite his phenomenal times, Gulveer Singh has yet to meet the stringent Olympic qualification standards, missing the 10,000m mark for Paris by over 41 seconds.

The following year, in 2023, Gulveer claimed another bronze at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. At the national level, he clinched the gold in the 10,000m event at the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships, showing his dominance in domestic competitions.
