India’s Asian Games champion in men’s shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, will be representing the country during the Asian Athletics Championship, to be held from July 12-16. The 28-year-old Olympian is among the 54-member Indian track and field squad selected for the next month's continental championship.
The 2018 Jakarta Asian Games champion had hogged the limelight during the final day of the just concluded 62nd National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship. He did so by recording a throw of 21.77m, which is an Asian record.
The national team was announced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) in New Delhi on Thursday.
Long jumper Sreeshankar Murali and 100m hurdles specialist Jyothi Yarraji are the other prominent athletes selected for the continental competition.
Olympian Jinson Johnson has been impressive on his comeback this season and will compete in the men's 1500m race at the event in Bangkok. Ajay Kumar Saroj has also been selected for the 1500m.
West Bengal’s teenage prodigy Rezoana Mallick Heena has been selected for the women’s 4x400m relay.
