The thought occurred to Lynne, as she recalled, while they watched the children and their friends run around the backyard together.
A local youth track team was a part of Young's upbringing in Camarillo, a town located approximately one hour north of Los Angeles. He was a water polo and soccer player as well.
In 2016, as he prepared to enter his first year of high school, he decided to concentrate on long-distance running. Young's younger twin brothers, Leo and Lex, as well as his parents, were encouraged to take up running as he got more involved in athletics.
Sean Brosnan took over as head coach of the cross-country and track programs the same year that Young started at Newbury Park High School. The 5-foot-1, shy boy who could run a respectable middle school mile in 5:05 was how Brosnan first saw Young. It didn't take long for Brosnan to see the very competitive teenager as what he refers to as "a generational talent."
