Rai Benjamin, born on July 27, 1997, is a prominent American hurdler and sprinter, specializing in the 400 meters and 400 meters hurdles. His impressive personal best time of 46.17 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles ranks him as the second-fastest man in history in this event. Benjamin achieved notable success at the Olympic Games in 2021, securing a silver medal in the men's 400-meter hurdles and was also a part of the team that won gold in the 4*400m relay event.

Additionally, he clinched silver medals at the World Championships in both 2019 and 2022 in the same discipline. Benjamin's prowess extends to relay events, contributing to gold medals in the 4x400 meters relay in 2019 and 2021. During his collegiate career, Benjamin showcased his exceptional talent while running for the UCLA Bruins and later for the USC Trojans. In early 2018, he played a pivotal role in setting the world's best time in the indoor 4x400 meters relay, clocking an impressive 3:00.77.

His relay split time of 44.35 seconds during this event was a record for indoor races at that time. In June of the same year, Benjamin contributed to setting the NCAA record in the outdoor 4 × 400 meters relay and also ran the second-fastest 400-meter hurdles race in history, finishing in 47.02 seconds. Hailing from Mount Vernon High School in New York, Benjamin participated in the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, representing Antigua and Barbuda in the 400-meter hurdles. His notable achievements in high school include winning the 2015 New York Indoor. State meet with a leading time of 33.17 in the 300 meters and securing three-time New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships in the 400-meter hurdles.

However, his most notable achievements came at the Tokyo Olympics. In the 400m hurdles event, Benjamin won his heat, clocking 48.60 seconds, to qualify for the semifinals. Here, the American finished second behind Karsten Warholm at 47.37 seconds, which was enough to take him to the final.

Here, he clocked a new personal best of 46.17 seconds which saw him claim the silver medal, losing to Karsten Warholm who set a new world record with a time of 45.94 seconds. Benjamin’s performance set a new North American record for 400m hurdles.

He was also a part of the United States’ 4*400m relay team but did not race in the Heats as his teammates clocked a season best 2:57.77 to reach the final. Benjamin was among the sprinters in the final alongside Michael Cherry, Michael Norman and Bryce Deadmon. The quartet produced a new season-best timing of 2:55.70 to seal the gold medal for the United States.

More recently, Benjamin competed at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, where he won the bronze in the 400m hurdles event and the gold in the 4*400m event.

In the hurdles, the American won his heat and finished second in the semifinals behind Karsten Warholm to qualify for the final. Here, he finished third behind Warholm and Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands with a timing of 47.56 seconds.

In the relay, Benjamin once again did not run in the heats as the United States finished above everybody to reach the final. The 26-year-old ran in the final as he along with Quincy Hall, Vernon Norwood and Justin Robinson, sealed the gold for the United States.
