Sam Kendricks is an American pole vaulter. Born on September 7, 1992, in Oceanside, California, Sam grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. Sam led his team to the 2009 MHSAA 5A State Championship. He also set a state record for vaulting 17 feet. Sam's record was later broken by his brother John Scott in 2023. Sam won state meets in 2010 and 2011 and was named the Gatorade boys' track and field athlete of the year in 2011.
Sam continued to compete at the University of Mississippi, winning NCAA Championships in 2013 and 2014. During his freshman season, Sam broke both Ole Miss Rebels pole vault records. In 2014, he turned professional. Besides his remarkable athletic career, Sam is a first lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. Sam started his career at a young age influenced by his father, Scott Kendricks. His father also competed in pole vaulting during his school days. However, he could not succeed much due to limited equipment in the school. While training Sam Kendricks at his school, Scott Kendricks made sure to provide the team with all essential equipment to progress.

Sam has achieved several awards throughout his pole vaulter career. He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, jumping 5.85 meters. Sam has won two gold medals at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019. In 2017, Kendricks joined the six-meter club and won gold at the 2017 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He won another gold at the 2019 World Championships with a jump of 5.97 meters.
Sam also has earned silver medals at the World Indoor Championships three times. First in 2016, he jumped 5.80 meters in Portland. In 2018, he cleared 5.85 meters in Birmingham. In 2024, he jumped 5.90 meters in Glasgow.
Sam also won the US Outdoor Championships with a jump of 5.75 in 2015 and in the same year, he finished 9th overall at the World Championships. In the following year, Sam was named the best outdoor at the IAAF World Challenge with a jump of 5.92 meters.
In 2019, Sam set the American pole vault record by jumping 6.06 meters. This was a significant achievement in his career, as only a handful of athletes have been able to do so.
Sam has excelled in many competitions such as in Diamond League where he won pole vault titles in 2017 and 2019. In 2013, he earned a gold medal at the Summer Universiade in Kazan and another gold at 2018 IAAF Continental Cup. As of now, Sam Kendricks is preparing to compete in the 2024 Olympics.
