Shot Putter Inderjeet Singh finally gets a job

Inderjeet Singh has had a staggering 2015 so far

The Indian shot putter Inderjeet Singh has finally received a job offer after years of struggle to get the much-needed financial support in order to work secure a medal for his home nation. The athlete has joined Indian Oil at its Northern Regional Office in the Capital in the officer cadre.

The 27-year old athlete thanked Indian Oil for offering him the job and was relieved to finally see his efforts being noticed. He said, “It was a major worry for the last three years. Today I am very happy and thank Indian Oil for giving me the job. I am happy that my effort on the field has finally got noticed. The burden is off my shoulder. Now I can earn my living while concentrating fully on my game”, as Times of India reports.

The Punjab-based shot putter had won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in June with a throw of 20.41m, creating a Championship record. Following that, he had also bagged a Gold medal in each of the three legs of the Asian Athletics Grand Prix Series in Bangkok.

Can concentrate on winning a medal for the country there

He was concerned about the state of other athletes who are not been able to get that much-needed support in order to continue their quest for a medal at the international stage.

He added, “It's good for me that I got it. But there are several others like me who are not getting a chance. There are no sponsors for several talented and deserving athletes who are leaving the sport because of lack of support. I wish more corporate houses came forward to help them with jobs."

Inderjeet assured that the thought of quitting because of the struggles never came to his mind and if he had not received any support, then also he would have prepared for 2016 Summer Olympics. He said, “"Even if I had not got this job, I would have sold my land in the village to prepare myself to represent India in the Olympics in Rio. Now that I am employed, I can concentrate on winning a medal for the country there.”

Many athletes have had their dreams cut short only because of a lack of funds, and if we would have lost the immense talent of Inderjeet Singh to the same curse, it would have been a great shame.

To that end, Sportskeeda is leading a crowdfunding campaign to assist Inderjeet. Anyone who wishes to contribute any amount of money to his cause can click on the link below and do their bit.
