Hunter Woodhall, born on February 17, 1999, in Georgia, faced a significant challenge from birth with fibular hemimelia, a congenital absence of the fibula in his legs. At just 11 months old, his parents made the difficult decision to amputate both his legs. He grew up in Syracuse, Utah, and was homeschooled until the fifth grade. After transitioning from artificial legs to carbon fiber blades, he joined the track team marking the beginning of his journey in athletics.
On graduating from Syracuse High School, Woodhall made history as the first double amputee to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship which was accepted at the University of Arkansas. During his freshman year, he competed in the SEC division alongside able-bodied athletes, participating in six indoor meets and seven outdoor meets.
His impressive times included running 1:58.04 over 800 meters and 47.42 over 400 meters, earning a bronze medal in the 4x400 at the SEC Outdoor Championships. His achievements led to nominations for NCAA Game Changer of the Year and recognition as a First-Team All-American in the 4x400 Relay and Distance Medley Relay.
In his sophomore and junior years, Woodhall achieved a lifetime-best of 46.22 seconds in the 400 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships and became a three-time All-American in the 4x400-meter relay. During his junior year, he also gained popularity on TikTok where he shared his inspiring story eventually leading to an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he received $20,000 to support his 2020 Paralympic goals.
