Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia who have won the Olympic bronze medal last year in Beijing proved his running skills once again by winning the London marathon 2010 in two hours, five minutes and 18 seconds on Sunday. Kebede was not able to win the title last year as he lost to Olympic gold medalist Sammy Wanjiru. This year marathon saw Wanjiru falling at 25 km mark.
The Ethiopian was grouped together with Albel Kirui and Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya at the 35 km mark. However, the Kenyan challenge was displaced by Kebede and Kenya’s hope of winning the seventh successive London men’s marathon title shattered. Mutai dropped back with Kirui and Kebede fighting for the top slot. However, the world champion Kirui was not able to challenge Kebede who for the final 10 kms of the race remained untroubled with no contestants having enough strength to come near him, thus seizing the victory.
Mutai notched the second slot finishing the race in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 23 seconds. Morocco’s Jauoad Gharib was at the third place by completing the race in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 55 seconds. Gharib’s compatriot Abbderrahime Bouramdane finished at the fourth place taking 2 hours, 7 minutes and 33 seconds to complete the race.
