He was first a student at New York-based Mount Vernon High School and later admitted to the University of Southern California.

Benjamin represented the UCLA Bruins of the University of California and later the USC Trojans of the University of Southern California while studying in college. In 2018, he was a member of the team that set a world-best in the indoor 4 × 400 m relay event with a time of 3:00.77. His relay split of 44.35 seconds was the quickest in an indoor race. Later that year the second-quickest 400m hurdler ever contributed to establishing the NCAA record in the 4×400 m relay in outdoor.
