Alem, originally from Tigray, Ethiopia, was a Math and English teacher before becoming a political refugee, imprisoned for his political beliefs. After being released, he fled to Sudan and eventually settled in the United States, where he worked various jobs, including at Aetna Insurance and the post office. Mana, also from Tigray, met Alem in Arlington, Virginia. Together, they raised their six children in America, instilling a strong value on education and resilience.

Yared Nuguse's hometown is Louisville, Kentucky, where he grew up after his family settled there. He is the fourth of six children and initially focused on academics, science workshops, and bowling during his early high school years. He showed little interest in sports until his P.E. teacher Mick Motley noticed his impressive mile time and recommended him to track coach Tim Holman. Eventually, Nuguse transitioned from the school's bowling team to track and field.

Yared Nuguse was born in Washington, D.C., before his family moved to various places including Maryland and Bloomington, Indiana, and eventually settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where he grew up. Nuguse studied at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, where he excelled as a high school runner before continuing his education at the University of Notre Dame. Initially aiming for dental school to become an orthodontist, he graduated in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and is currently pursuing a master's degree in management at the university.
