The Texas Rangers won the World Series in 2023 and seemed poised for more. Unfortunately, that didn't transpire. They took a major step back in 2024 and missed the playoffs. Here are the five things they can do now to bolster their roster and get back to the postseason.
What the Rangers must do now
5) Trade Tyler Mahle
The Rangers have a lot of pitching depth and some prospects to back that up. If they're going to trade out of a position of strength, it should be the pitching staff. Tyler Mahle is a pending free agent.
He also makes $11 million per year, which is salary that could be devoted to a star free agent instead of a surplus pitcher who might not come back after the season ends.
4) Trade for Luis Robert Jr.
The center field depth chart in Texas isn't overwhelmingly inspiring. Leody Taveras and Evan Carter, who's the starting left fielder, are the only two players listed. The Chicago White Sox are probably interested in cleaning house even further, so Luis Robert Jr. could be available.
Robert had a bad 2024, but he had been one of the best outfielders prior to that. A change of scenery and leaving a 121-loss team can only do him well, so the Rangers should make this deal, especially while his value is a little lower.
3) Trade for Jordan Montgomery
When was the last time Jordan Montgomery was good? Coincidentally, it was the last time the Rangers were good. They won the World Series together. Apart, the Rangers missed the postseason and Montgomery was demoted to the bullpen and called a mistake signing by his team owner.
The Arizona Diamondbacks want to move on from Montgomery, who does cost $25 million. The Rangers should take the flyer on the pitcher since he was very good for them and he liked pitching there.
2) Sign Pete Alonso
The Rangers traded Nathaniel Lowe. Their current first baseman is Jake Burger, who is a fine player. Pete Alonso would be an upgrade, and the market for Alonso is so thin right now that it might drive his price down.
The Rangers have shown a willingness to spend to get to and win the World Series. They can get back to the playoffs by doing the same, and the biggest free agent left at a position the Rangers can use is Alonso.
1) Sign Tanner Scott
The Rangers won the World Series in 2023 thanks to inspired bullpen play. They currently have a solid bullpen, but they're losing Kirby Yates in all likelihood. To replace his high-leverage innings, the Rangers can upgrade with Tanner Scott.
Scott led all of his fellow reliever free agents in fWAR over the last two seasons at 4.5. He's also 30 when most of his counterparts are significantly older than that. This pairing would boost the Rangers significantly.
