You never know what to make of rumors when fans are involved. You just don’t know if someone is trying to build a name for themselves, or thinks that messing with people is cute and funny. I heard a Bears fan call into the Score 670 after the lockout ended and swore that he had a source within the Bears organization that told him the team was going to make a play for free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Yeah…totally.
So what should we make of Noah Pinzur’s claim that he saw Epstein at a Lincoln Park Starbucks on Saturday? I don’t put any stock into it, but then again, I’m always cynical when it comes to these types of rumors. However, I couldn’t help but get excited at the prospect of Epstein grabbing an iced latte for his woman before shooting over to Wrigley for an under the radar interview with Tom Ricketts.
Pinzur said this to the Chicago Tribune…
“It was Theo all right,” said Pinzur, a lifelong Cubs fan. “I’m 99.9 percent sure.”
Pinzur said he was sitting near the window of the Starbucks on Racine & Wrightwood, checking out porn on his laptop (I’m kidding, chill), when a Honda SUV pulled up and parked out front with the engine running. The driver stayed in the car, while Epstein, or his doppelganger, walked in wearing a ”Diablos” baseball cap and stood in line.
Pinzur approached the Epstein clone…
“Excuse me,” he said. “Are you Theo Epstein?”
“No,” replied Epstein, or the Epstein lookalike. “I get that a lot.”
After a brief pause, the real or fake Epstein added: “Who is Theo Epstein?”
Pinzur replied: “He’s the guy who may become general manager of the Cubs, or at least we hope.”
Pinzur went back and sat down to continue his porn surfing as the Theo clone ordered a drink for his female companion.
“Once he had to ask me who ‘Theo Epstein’ was, I knew it was him,” Pinzur said. “It was clearly him being driven in the direction of Wrigley Field.”
Pinzur googled “Theo Epstein’s wife.” He was convinced that the companion who ordered the iced drink was definitely Epstein’s wife. Putting two and two together, he concluded that Epstein was headed to Wrigley for his long-awaited job interview.
So there you have it. All I can think is, this is so Cubs. If you’ve been reading me lately, you know that I am all about Theo coming to the Cubs. He has the cache, name, & talent that Ricketts needs to help secure the $300 million he wants to renovate the dump at Clark & Addison. That’s Ricketts’ number one objective here, and it should be. Once the renovation is done, more money will be brought in, which will lead to better players being brought in by Epstein. Is that simple enough?
I have no idea if Epstein was here over the weekend, but we can only hope. He is Ricketts’ number one option, and it will be a failure if Tommy Boy cannot secure Boston’s golden boy. I’m always down for a hot rumor like this, so I’ll channel my inner meatball fan and go with Pinzur’s story…for now. What do you know, Epstein is already giving me hope.
