New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter was a star MLB player and one of the most grounded people in the history of the game. Jeter received a lot of support from his fans, family members, and colleagues during his playing career, including veteran Darryl Strawberry.
The World Series champion was once counseled by Strawberry on the trappings of fame and fortune.
David Cone, Jeter and Strawberry’s Yankees teammate, once spoke to The Post about how Strawberry’s mentorship helped Jeter blossom into a model professional.
“Strawberry was actually in a reverse-role at that point — he was teaching Jeter how not to do what he did, so he was great counsel,” Cone said.
“I was around with Darryl in the '80s, too. We kind of had been through it before. We knew where to go, how to hide and how to avoid certain situations through experience. Darryl was a great mentor to Jeter.”

According to Buster Olney's 2000 article for the New York Times, Jeter thought of Strawberry as an "older brother."
The New York Mets and the Yankees won World Series titles in 1986 and 1999, respectively, thanks in large part to Strawberry. Additionally, due to his three MLB suspensions for drug use, there have been numerous stories about his enormous talent being unrealized.
Derek Jeter is one of the greatest MLB players of all time
No other name was more closely associated with New York baseball in the 2000s and early 2010s than Jeter. He was arguably the most recognizable player in baseball during that time. Jeter played for the Bombers for 20 years, helped them win five World Series, and was chosen for 14 All-Star teams.

Jeter garnered 396 out of 397 votes (99.75%), the second-highest percentage in MLB history (behind his teammate Mariano Rivera), and the highest by a position player.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2020. From September 2017 to February 2022, Jeter served as both the Miami Marlins' league president and CEO.
