Jose Trevino, a catcher for the New York Yankees, is adding to his team's preseason headaches. He is the latest in a string of injuries that threaten to challenge the Bronx Bombers' cohesion in the early part of the season.
Trevino, 30, hit .248/.283/.388 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs in 115 games for the Yankees last season. He emerged as Yankees manager Aaron Boone's first choice behind the plate midseason after hitting .388 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in May 2022.
MLB writer Bryan Hoch reported on Tuesday that Trevino will be out with a wrist strain for the next week or so.
When the news first broke, many were worried that Trevino would be out for a long term. The Yankees have already incurred injuries to key players like Frankie Montas, Harrison Bader and former San Francisco Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon.
Although Aaron Boone said that Trevino could be back in the lineup next week, he urged caution. The manager did not rule out the possibility of an injection for Trevino, but said that Trevino would be ready for opening day.
"Jose Trevino has been out with a right wrist sprain. Aaron Boone said Trevino is expected to resume playing later this week, though an injection remains possible. Boone said he expects Trevino will be ready for Opening Day" Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch tweeted.
Despite spending six years playing for the Texas Rangers, Trevino could never quite crack the starting catcher spot. That changed after he was traded to the New York Yankees in April 2022.
Although Kyle Higashoika was slated to be the starting catcher, Trevino soon began to impress manager Aaron Boone. Trevino emerged as a better option and was given the starting role.
Noted for his great defensive play, Trevino was awarded both a Golden Glove Award and a place as a second-string catcher on the AL team for the 2022 All-Star Game in Los Angeles.
Although the New York Yankees are undergoing several counundrums around the field in terms of positional assignments, Jose Trevino is expected to face little opposition in terms of challengers behind the plate this season.
Jose Trevino could be rewarded with a good extension for a good 2023
Thankfully for his team, Trevino should be back in the lineup for the start of the season. This means that he will have ample opportunity to show his team why they need to keep him around.
