Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Trayce Thompson tried to hype up Team Great Britain for their upcoming World Baseball Classic game but chose a unique approach. Instead of appealing to their patriotism or some of the great underdog moments that have happened, he referenced his own team's loss.
In 2022, the Dodgers won an MLB-high 111 games but were unceremoniously bounced from the playoffs in just four games. Thompson's reference to this loss was a bold move considering he was on the losing side. He wanted to give an example of how anything can happen in baseball, but he could have picked one that didn't remind the fans of their heartbreaking defeat.
Bob Nightengale shared the comments from Trayce Thompson on Twitter.
Having heartbreaking losses brought up out of the blue is never a good feeling for fans. The Los Angeles Dodgers were favorites to reach and win the World Series practically all year, so their loss to the San Diego Padres was incredibly surprising, especially considering the Padres were without superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. for the entire postseason.
The World Baseball Classic is drawing more interest from the sports community than it ever has before. Team Great Britain has a solid smattering of MLB players but is considered long shots to go deep in the tournament. However, as Trayce Thompson pointed out to the chagrin of Dodgers fans, anything can happen in baseball.
Of course, other fans loved this unexpected reminder of the Los Angeles Dodgers' season-ending playoff loss. Neutral fans will rarely cheer for the favorites in a given series, especially when the favorite is a legendary franchise with tons of success like the Dodgers.
Trayce Thompson accidentally drew the ire of his team's fanbase, but maybe his play will make them forget about it sooner rather than later.
The Los Angeles Dodgers enter 2023 with high expectations yet again
The Dodgers were supposed to be an all-time great team in 2022, and they were during the regular season. The expectations on the club are similarly high once again considering the cast of stars the team boasts. Led by Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Clayton Kershaw, they should be dominant yet again.
The real test will come, once again, in the postseason. For a team of this caliber, anything less than a deep playoff run is a disappointment. Hopefully, they will be able to avoid giving Trayce Thompson any further anecdotes in 2023.
